Another "Macaca Moment" from Virginia's Republican Lawmakers

Del. Hargrove (R-Hanover) brings us the latest in a series of "Macaca Moments" from Virginia's Republican statesmen:

Virginia legislator's comments on slavery anger blacks, Jews

By BOB LEWIS
AP Political Writer

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A state legislator's statement that black people "should get over" slavery and questioning whether Jews should apologize "for killing Christ" caused furious and tearful denunciations Tuesday before stunned lawmakers.

Del. Frank D. Hargrove, in defending himself, told one of his critics, a delegate whose Jewish ancestors immigrated from Nazi-occupied Poland, that "your skin is a little too thin."

Hargrove, 79, in an interview published Tuesday in The Daily Progress of Charlottesville, voiced opposition to a measure apologizing on behalf of the state to the descendants of slaves.

In the interview, Hargrove, R-Hanover, said slavery ended nearly 140 years ago with the Civil War and added, "I personally think that our black citizens should get over it."

The newspaper also quoted him as wondering aloud, "are we going to force the Jews to apologize for killing Christ?"

3. I'm starting to wonder if the Rethugs aren't really the greatest
asset the Democrats have!! Just leave them to their own devices long enough, and they'll be like Oz's wicked witch .... "slowly, slowly melting into their own wickedness."

It has almost become a sideshow, watching them being dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. No - maybe we should make that the 19th century. They've been marching backwards so long there's no way we could expect them to actually wake up and realize it's 2007 - even here in Virginia, which, of course, tends to live in its own time warp in some ways.

What a great time to be alive and be a Democrat!!!!

4. I enjoyed the description of gasps and groans coming from the floor
as this demented old man kept talking and talking. Look on your works, ye Republicans, and despair!

5. Oh, yes, ain't it sweet!
They're actually going to have to start learning about sharing the world (and - gasp - Virginia!) with black people, and Catholics, and gay people, and Jews, and Muslims, and people who go to the "wrong church" - and - oh, my God - even some who don't belong to the Country Club!!!
