Okay, so maybe all the good Republicans were off doing obeisance to their TV sets during the President's convention night, but I was helping staff the Albemarle County Dems tent at the county fair for several hours and we were getting a steady stream of people stopping by to get Kerry/Edwards lapel stickers, yard signs, and bumper stickers. Last year at the Dems tent staffers had time to read the newspaper in between visits; this year there was maybe time to skim a couple of headlines. And the supporters were not just the usual suspects, UVa students and newcomers from California and New York: we got plenty of native Virginians, city folk and rural, with dignified FFV accents and with old-timey Appalachian hollow twangs as well.
The only negative was that while everyone knew what the Kerry/Bush election means, lots of people were unaware of the 5th District congressional race. We had no trouble getting them interested in Al Weed, but all the focus on the presidential race might be making it hard for the congressional newcomers to get attention. So don't forget to talk up your local candidates when you're discussing November with people.
