1. Never mind :)
I just noticed that Warner also attended a similar fundraiser for Harris Miller.

No wonder Va Dems have no money, we are a confused constituency, eh?

Split we are :( You would think the Va Dems wouldn't force a primary?

How would you like us to decide who goes against Allen?

Now, I've never been that big a fan of primaries, as you can see the strengths or weakness of a candidate.

This senate primary is definitely making me lower my expectations for victory in November.

3. straw polls and the media ?
Webb is the poll and media darling :hi: Google Webb, he's a national concern for the GOP and Allen based on the articles written about him on RW websites.

Seriously, primaries take money which the va-dems don't have against the GOP 2008 Presidential hopeful's war chest. I like both dem candidates, but I think Webb has a better chance of beating Allen.

4. I don't have any faith in the local media to cover a senate race in . . .
a meaningful way. The last poll I saw had Miller and Webb both losing to Allen.

I can see on paper why everybody thinks Webb has the edge. It's just he continues to disappoint me. His responses in the last few weeks are raising serious concerns for me.

Of course Miller doesn't looking any better and his chance for victory seems worse than Webb's.

5. My glass is half full :)
Have you seen this article from the Richmond paper?:

&oasDN=timesdispatch.com&oasPN=%21news%21politics

Also, Webb's had Allen under 50% before he officially entered the race! Imagine what we can "DU" in 5 months :toast:

This article is a perfect example of why I have concerns with Webb and his ability to beat Allen. He has two respected retired generals come out to support him. So what does Webb do with good news and a positive media story these two endorsements would make??? Does he join them in calling for Rumsfeld resignation? Hell no!

Webb, a former secretary of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan, trumpeted their endorsements at a news conference while declining personally to call for Rumsfeld's resignation over handling of the U.S. war in Iraq.

He under cut his own endorsers by not joining them. Which allowed the writer of the article to not only bring up Miller, but to point out Miller has called for Rumsfeld to resignation. Honestly if he can screw something up that simple, how is he going to stand up to Allen's dirty politics?

With all that I'd still vote for Webb or Miller. I hate Allen that much Va democrats could run just about anybody and I'd at least vote for them in the general election.

8. Don't you think he....
...he needs some political capital before calling for resignations? Have you heard him discuss the war and what he thinks of those who are responsible for it?

So we just let Allen win and the Republicans keep the Senate...because Webb doesn't say and do everything EXACTLY the way you want him to?

9. No, I thought his Military career which is all he's running . . .
on would be enough.

Specially since he now has about three respected generals support. He could have backed away from calling for Rumsfeld resignation early in the race. Then he could have joined their call for Rumsfeld with these generals when they came out to support him. It would showed he listens to the generals something *w doesn't do. It also illustrates that his military experience is necessary in the senate. CNN even had a poll yesterday showing that over 50% of respondent disapproved of Rumsfeld. Even a few Republicans have called for Rumsfeld to resin. John Warner seems willing to hold hearing on Rumsfeld job performance. So it's not that liberal of an idea to call for Rumsfeld's resignation.

Yes, and he's saying just about the same thing most moderate Democrats have said. Why would joining the Democratic message that real drastic changes need to be made for success to occur in Iraq. Doom Webb or Miller's chances of victory in November.

This isn't about what I or anyone else likes. It's about making smart political decision to show you're capable of performing the job.

10. You need to see Webb speak.
Go to his website and find an opportunity. He's running on a lot more than his military record.

The "Impeach Bush" banner is easy applause from the left wing. I have no doubt in my mind that if we win the House and Senate impeachment will be at the top of the agenda. It's an understanding that doesn't need to be broadcast. I want to know that we have the right people in place to pick up the pieces AFTER impeachment.

This election is about regime change. But unlike Bush's war in Iraq, I don't want us to celebrate a "Mission Accomplished" the day after the election, without having a plan and the right people to carry on.

Gore was capable...Kerry was capable...Webb is more than capable. What he needs is our solid support and good voter turnout.

13. hmm...
I think Warner had promised to do a fundraiser for Miller, then Webb joined the race. Warner stood by his promise and held the fundraiser. Now he'll do the same for Webb.

Betting on a Novice in Virginia
By SALLY B. DONNELLY

When is a Senate race more than just a Senate race? When Democrats think they can score a trifecta by beating a Republican incumbent in the South, hobbling him as a possible presidential candidate and boosting the fortunes of one of their White House wannabes. That's the weighty challenge for novice politician Jim Webb, a decorated Vietnam vet and a senior Pentagon official under Ronald Reagan who is challenging Republican Senator George Allen in Virginia.

Webb still has to get through the June 13 Democratic primary, but pragmatists in his party are already tipping him as the man to win in November against the folksy Allen, who is also mulling a run for President in 2008. Allen's continued support for the war in Iraq and for President Bush has hurt his approval ratings, while Webb, a former Marine and an early, articulate critic of the war, has seen his numbers rise. University of Virginia political analyst Larry Sabato says both score about 40% in polls. "Jim Webb is George Allen's worst nightmare: a war hero and a Reagan appointee who holds moderate positions," says Sabato. "Allen tries to project a Reagan aura, but Webb already has it."

Webb has drawn a diverse crowd of supporters. Conservative columnist George F. Will has written an approving article about him, three retired generals have endorsed him, and he has raised thousands of dollars from Hollywood for his campaign. He also seems to have the backing of former Virginia Governor Mark Warner, a moderate Democrat who will probably run for President in 2008. Warner, who initially encouraged businessman Harris Miller to run, has said he will stay neutral before the primary. But he may be changing his bet: he makes his first public appearance with Webb this week, at a fund raiser in Arlington, Va.
