I got a sneaky flier in the mail supporting Potts & paid for by Kilgore
Did anyone else get one? On the front it says "2005 Official Democrat and Progressive Voter Guide - Governor of Virginia" with the big red and blue kicking donkey symbol that the Democratic Party uses. Inside it compares Potts and Kaine's view on reproductive rights, gun laws, same-sex marriage rights, etc. and according to them Potts is much more progressive. It ends with "Tim Kaine has turned his back on the issues you believe in. Call him and tell him just how disappointed you are. Russ Potts is the only candidate who will stand up for progressive principles."

It seemed suspicious to me that the Democratic Party would be sending out something to lead people away from Tim Kaine in the last few days before election day, so I looked closely and saw in tiny letters beside one of the pictures it said "Paid for and authorized by Virginians for Jerry Kilgore". I think that's awful and I hope it doesn't fool anyone into throwing away their vote on Russ 4% Potts.

Can they legally use that kicking donkey symbol?

I didn't notice until I just read on Daily Kos about it that it was Kilgore's campaign. I'd originally thought it was a last ditch effort by Potts to get some votes (I wasn't not too familiar with him, with only a vague impression he was an Independent on the Republican side.)

I hope Kaine and Potts do some sort of appearance together to condemn the flyer, as it is harmful to both. It's not just about trying to trick liberals and progressives into not voting for Tim Kaine; it's also meant to trick conservatives who were going to vote for Potts into either not voting at all or voting for Kilgore since they'd be against the "progressive" positions of Potts (assuming those are even factual, but we're dealing with Kilgore people here...). Voila, liberal vote loss for Kaine and conservative vote gain for Kilgore.

It's pretty creative, in a disgusting Rovian way.

3. I got one too
I've called the Kilgore Richmond office to complain about it repeatedly - hoping to tie up the lines they use for their GOTV efforts.

4. To my chagrin, my local "flung for free in the driveway" rag
reports that Kaine was fined $100 recently for disseminating campaign stuff with the elephant on it, so... I guess it is legal.;(

I suppose with Kilgore hiring campaign organizers who also smeared Max Cleland and came up with the 'Swift Boat Vets' attack, the gloves were necessarily off, but I do wish it hadn't come to this...

5. It may be too late, but has anyone alerted the Kaine campaign?

6. Gov. Warner mentioned it in his speech this morning
When Kaine, Deeds, Byrne, and Warner were all doing a rally in Roanoke this morning Warner mentioned the flier and also phony telephone messages supposedly from Kaine that the Kilgore campaign is using to try to trick voters. So they know about it, and they are letting supporters know (though a TV commercial would be more effective if there was time.)

Someone told me there was something written about the misleading fliers in the Roanoke newspaper too - that's good exposure around here.

7. I got one
It was in the box this morning. Must have been delivered yesterday. I wonder how long it would have taken me to figure it out if it weren't for your post? LOL. I hadn't heard about it anywhere else. I can't believe those Kilgore creeps and I don't think this will help them at all. It pisses me off, but you know what? I'm not even gonna worry about it. Kaine supporters are pretty smart folks. They'll figure it out. It's just the same dirty tricks from republicans over and over and it's really getting old.

8. I feel so unloved...
I'd been practically waiting by the mailbox every day to see if I was the lucky recipientof Kilgore literature in the mail that I could ritualistically burn while trying to cast a voodoo hex on that twatwaffle. :P

But between me, my sister, and our parents we maybe got one Kilgore mailing apiece during Silly Season. Tim Kaine, OTOH, was all over us, even though it was certainly never necessary.
