Kilgore not aided in poll by death penalty ads
http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=94159&ran=87317RICHMOND — A series of hard-hitting television ads accusing Democrat Timothy M. Kaine of being weak on enforcing the death penalty did not help Republican Jerry W. Kilgore in this fall’s gubernatorial race, according to a new poll.
Twenty-five percent of respondents said the commercials made them less likely to support Kilgore, while 10 percent said the ads made them more apt to back him, according to a survey conducted Tuesday through Thursday by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington.
Thirty-seven percent of those polled said the ads would have no effect on their voting decision.
The survey suggested Kilgore received no momentum from the ads. The difference in support between Kilgore and Kaine, who had 44 percent and 42 percent respectively, was only 1 percentage point more than in a Mason-Dixon poll in September.
Law and order, however, is not high on voters’ minds. Only 7 percent of poll respondents named public safety as the most important issue this fall.
Asked to name the most vital issue, 21 percent said education, 17 percent said taxes and spending, and 15 percent said transportation. Kaine was rated likely to be slightly more effective than Kilgore on each of those top three issues. Kaine also received a higher rating than his opponent in being likely to protect the environment
