Charlottesville, anyone?
Hi!
I am looking into different areas to relocate after graduation next year, and Charlottesville keeps popping up on my list.

Does anyone have anything they can offer me as far as pros/cons about the area??

Thanks so much!!

1. I used to live there.
It has its virtues, but the summers are dreadful. Hazy, hot, humid. The mildew capital of Virginia. Surrounding Albemarle County is, in my opinion, a preferable place to live. I've lived there too.

What will you be doing in C'ville?

2. Respiratory Therapist.......
As for the hot, hazy and humid summers, I have those here in WV :P
It seems to be a great place to live from what I have seen, but it's hard to tell not having been there. And it's a liberal community, very important. Why do you prefer Albermarle, may I ask?

Less congestion. More cows and trees.

Respiratory Therapist: at UVa Hospital? Martha Jefferson?

4. UVA
They do a lot of recruiting at my school. It seems like a great package. The lady at the last seminar mentioned Albermarle I believe, and she said that the commute wasn't bad. I might have to take a trip down there this summer and spend a weekend checking things out :)
BTW, more cows sounds good, as long as it's not far from civilization.
I know that the area is blue, but are the people there really more liberal? I have had about all I can take of Bush fanatics up here :P

8. C'ville is not liberal.
It is all rich elitists. 16yro driving Range Rovers etc. The sprawl is also getting out of hand there.

15. UVA is blue isn't it?
Of course it's the home of

http://www.centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/

As I recall, UVA endorsed Kerry, despite Sabato <g>

C'ville is beautiful and close to Wintergreen's ski resort. But with your credentials, go towards Tidewater (Norfolk area) and the beach :hi: They probably pay more too :)

5. Charlottesville is nice
And about as blue as you'll get in Central VA.

From what I hear, be careful as to what neighborhood you pick if you live in the city. UVA seems to have a real problem with serial rapists.

You may want to take the other poster's advice and look at the surrounding county. But it's a beautiful area and there's lots to do if you like music and the outdoors (two of the main reasons I end up in Charlottesville).

6. Ewww serial rapists? Scary....
Thanks for the reply. I am always interested to hear what people like/dislike about an area. I saw on their website there is an annual vegetarian parade/festival. How cool is that? :)

7. I've been pleasantly surprised as to how many veg festivals
there are in all of Central VA. Richmond also has some big ones. I didn't know about Charlottesville's, so I may have to make the drive to that one.

9. the 'ville
1. The county is Albemarle, not Albermarle. I am new here, but please get this straight before relocation.

2. Charlottesville is a pleasant city to visit. I don't live there, I live in the county, just outside city limits, renting a home right now. You may want to look at c'ville's property taxes.

3. After some time away, I was able to return to the 'ville.
3a. They (council, mayor. and city in general) do have the best interest at heart, but they seem to stumble on occassion. For example, the idea of having bikes downtown available to whomever, i.e. the lunch time crowd and various other folks, was a good idea, but all the bikes got stolen.
3a1. That said, C'ville is forward thinking, for the most part, which can be good at times.

4. Charlottesville is like a little free-radical in the area, bouncing around, doing what they think is best (or not caring about the opinions of other communities).

check out www.charlottesville.org; www.albemarle.org; www.dailyprogress.com; www.virginia.edu (click on news-lower left side); or nbc29 (can't bring up their site right now)

You may want to check out property in Crozet (not quite as popular at Charlottesville, but just down 250).

If there is a specific apartment community or housing area that you'd like more info on, let me know, I live here.

Good Luck

12. Thanks for the welcome..
I read more than I post.

And, you must check out the Downtown Mall, there should be links from some of those sites that I'm just not remembering right now. I just returned from a lovely evening down there.

14. My sister and her family are moving to Albemarle soon, actually.
They said housing prices are expensive (they're moving from Newport News which is southeastern VA)...comparable she said to what you'd pay up in Northern VA/DC.

I heard it's liberal up in Charlottesville/Albemarle. I know they went for Kerry. She said she saw some cool stores around Charlottesville, and chuckled (in agreement) at a sticker she saw that said "BU_ _ SH _ _." I'd seen it before, but I guess she hadn't.
