Democrat Timothy M. Kaine is returning fire in a radio advertising duel with his likely Republican foe for governor, invoking the Bible and describing himself as a conservative on "personal responsibility, character, family and the sanctity of life."
More than a week after former Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore unleashed the first attack ad of the race, the lieutenant governor offers a veiled defense of his support of higher taxes and vows to enforce the death penalty, which -- along with abortion he says he opposes on religious grounds.
In the ad, Kaine accuses Kilgore of questioning his faith. Kaine cites a newspaper interview in which the Republican is quoted as saying Kaine never mentioned his religion until it became expedient to do so. Kilgore has said the quote is erroneous.
"Now I'm running for governor and my opponent, Jerry Kilgore, is attacking my religious faith and distorting my public record," Kaine says.
