Late primary may mean delay in getting funds to Matheson challenger
GOP worried by $$ flow in 2nd District

By Lee Davidson
Deseret Morning News

WASHINGTON — A national GOP leader says the same circumstances are emerging again that delayed Republican donations into Utah's competitive 2nd District House race two years ago until it was too late to defeat Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah.

Rep. Tom Reynolds, R-N.Y., chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, lamented in a briefing about key races Wednesday that problems in Utah come because its primary election is one of the latest in the nation.

"If I had a want and wish list, I would say to Utah, 'Why don't you either have a convention or a primary — not both — to speed up selecting nominees?' " said Reynolds, who oversees the arm of the Republican Party that raises money for House races.

Most special interests and the party wait until a nominee is chosen before donating. When that happens late, donations are slowed and campaigns are not able to plan or organize as well. Available money also may go instead to races where need and viability were apparent earlier.

1. Matheson
I saw Scott Matheson Jr. speak at a forum a couple of weeks back. I must say, he is not the most inspiring speaker--then again, neither is Huntsman Jr. for that matter.

When asked what differentiates him from one of the Republican candidates, Huntsman and Karras, Matheson became flustered and side stepped the question. He is, therefore, the perfect type of Democrat in this election. In other words, he would have a good chance of becoming governor.
