Events
A couple of important events are coming up. First, tomorrow evening at 7:00
pm in the Layton City Council Chambers located at Layton City Center, 437 N
Wasatch Blvd a hearing is being held to review the question of the sign Mike
Norton placed in his yard to commemorate the fallen in Iraq. If you can, we
urge you to attend this important hearing and speak up for Mr. Norton's
rights as an American to have this sign in his yard. We particularly urge
you to attend if you are a resident of Layton or live in Davis County.

Second, our next regularly scheduled UDPC meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on
July 14th at the Salt Lake City Library, room C. This month's speaker will
be Dr. Lauren Florence of the Utah Health Alliance. She will be sharing with
us their presentation on the state of America's health care system and their
remedy for action we can take in Utah to change our health care system for
the better at the state level. If you have not seen this presentation before
it is well worth it. If you have, this is a great opportunity to brush up
on your facts and come away with some ideas for communicating our message on
healthcare to the public.

Here are events from the Utah Peace calendar:

- This Thursday's KRCL Radioactive show will be on the Patriot Act . Be
prepared to call in and join the conversation if at all possible. 12pm-1pm
This Thursday, July 7th.

- Each Friday in August there will be a free film on nuclear issues ,
beginning with Friday, August 6th, the 60th anniversary of the U.S. bombing
of Hiroshima. The films will be shown at Free Speech Zone, 2144 South
Highland Drive, Suite 130, at 7:30pm. Watch the PPJ site for details. More
info, 502-8556.
Friday July 8 - 7:30pm - FREE FILM: "Unconstitutional: The War on Our Civil
Liberties" Get the real story behind the USA PATRIOT Act and other
administration policies and the gut wrenching stories behind those
affected--from law-abiding store clerks to United States Olympians unable to
travel. It'll remind you of what America used to stand for and what it seems
we're falling for now. In short, this one-hour film will affirm why you're
angry and give you a tool to help others join your ranks.
Brought to you by the same producer of the films, Unprecedented: The 2000
Presidential Election and Uncovered: The War on Iraq, the film
Unconstitutional, The War on Our Civil Liberties provides the facts and
stories that illuminate administration lies, wrongheaded policies, and the
real victims of these actions--the American people.

Don't know what to do about Sandra Day O'Connor leaving?

We're having another strategizing meeting -- and everyone is welcome, infact, bring your friends

The next meeting:

Thursday
July 7th
3pm
@UPNet offices
1115 South 900 East
466-0955
We'll be talking about what action we should take, how to frame our issues, how to get our voice out. Everyone is welcome and please pass this email on.

FYI: some talking points from http://www.civilrights.org :

President Bush:

I implore you to nominate consensus candidates with mainstream records. Presently, the Supreme Court is sharply divided on a number of matters of tremendous importance. Future appointments could tip the scales for many decades to come. Your leadership in nominating middle-of-the-road candidates can save the nation from a divisive fight and help to heal our already divided country. Justice O'Connor has played a balancing role on the Court and a critical role in protecting civil rights and individual rights. It is therefore incumbent on the President to nominate a Justice in the tradition of O'Connor.

Senators, I urge you to dutifully and conscientiously fulfill your constitutional responsibility to "advise and consent" on judicial nominations. The confirmation process must be deliberative and thorough. Anything less would be a disservice to the importance of this lifetime position.
