Meee - OW! Strayhorn not invited to GOP gala.

GOP snubs Strayhorn
By Mike Ward
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Wednesday, January 19, 2005
As political fund-raisers go, the big GOP bash in Austin next month is a Who's Who gala: Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Tom Craddick are the honorees, and the state's other top Republican elected officials signed the fund-raising invitations.

Well, almost every other one.

Conspicuously absent is Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn, who has made headlines recently by criticizing Perry and hinting that she might run against him next year.

"Comptroller Strayhorn was not invited in any shape, form or fashion to sign this invitation. Furthermore, she was not even invited to attend the event," said her spokesman, Mark Sanders.

2. Stiffen your spine. We need to vote in '06 Texas GOP primary.
Unless you want another Perry term, we need to vote for one of them gals. Hutchinson is my favorite now, because (a) she is pro-choice, and (b) she had the balls to vote against some of Bush's more egregious judicial nominees, Judge Holmes in particular.

3. Well, it's a good idea,
but since I wanna be a precinct chair, I pretty much CAN'T vote in the GOP primary. Probably a good tactic though.

4. Sure you can. And it puts you in great position to encourage others.
The one concern, though, is that some will feel there are more important races in the Democratic primary. Perhaps what we need is a website where Democrats can pair up, to free themselves to vote in the GOP primary. In other words, if Joe would do this, except he really wants to vote for candidate X in the Democratic primary, he gets paired with Sue who want to vote for candidate Y in the Democratic primary, and their lost votes having effectively cancelled, both are now free to walk the dark side and save us from another Perry term.

Think guerilla politics.

5. Um, I'm pretty sure that it's in our county party charter
that prospective precinct chairs are REQUIRED to have voted in the most recent Democratic primary in order to be eligible to become a precinct chair. And your voting record shows what primary you voted in. If I manage to get appointed as a precinct chair between now and 06, I might consider it.

7. I voted in a repug primary once; it's not worth the damage to your soul
In 2002 I had been redistricted out of Gonzalo Barrientos'into Jeff Wentworth's senate district. Wentworth was opposed in the primary by a fire-breathing loony so I voted for the lesser of two evils in the republican primary. In the next session, Wentworth sponsored legislation to enable Lowe's to build a huge store in my neighborhood (we're still fighting it) that's about half a mile from an already-existing Home Despot; sponsored the Texas version of the Defense of Marriage Act; and of course supported the congressional redistricting that tore me out of Lloyd Doggett's district and deposited me in the odious Lamar Smith's. Screw you Jeff!

Save your soul. Vote Blue.

8. Chuckle. I understand your frustrations. But...
Well, I could say "but I'm still in Doggett's district." That wouldn't be nice, though. Instead, I'll just point out that I see no stain on your soul. Perhaps it is a mite sensitive about walking on the dark side. But I assure you, if you step carefully and have a heart that is true, the dark does not come off on you.

9. If we Democrats are smart, we'll start playing the Strayhorns off against
the Perrys and get some actual important stuff done this session.

I love when they get catty. :7
