Dear fellow Democrat,
Every ten years, after the decennial census, all jurisdictions with single member districts must redraw those district boundaries, if necessary, to meet the one-person, one vote constitutional standard that requires districts to be of reasonable equal population.
The redistricting process is currently underway in the Texas Legislature, which is responsible for drawing Congressional, State Senate, State House, and State Board of Education districts. A few maps have already been proposed, which you can view on the Texas Redistricting website, but the process is far from over.
Tomorrow, April 15th, at 12pm or upon adjournment, and on Sunday April 17th at 2pm, you will have an opportunity to make your voice heard on the proposed districts for the State House. The House Redistricting Committee will hold a public hearing at the State Capitol in Room E1.030. If you can make it to Austin, I encourage you to attend and tell the legislators to draw a fair and legal map that provides representation for the minority populations responsible for our state’s population growth.
Additionally, you are invited to participate in a webinar about the Texas redistricting process, Thursday, April 21 at 7pm CDT.
This webinar will cover the basics of what redistricting is and the process involved, the status of redistricting in the Texas Legislature, and what you as a citizen can do to have an impact.
Register for the webinar by clicking HERE. After registering you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
