The Bartonville Town Council voted Wednesday night to impose a 90-day moratorium on new permits for natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing.

The council also agreed to form a seven-member advisory board on gas drilling and production, although no appointments were made.

Mayor Ron Robertson said the moratorium would serve as a "cooling off period" as town leaders continue studying potential new regulations. The drilling moratorium is largely symbolic, he said, since the industry currently isn't seeking new drilling permits in Bartonville.

However, he said, the moratorium will buy time to continue studying hydraulic fracturing, a controversial practice that involves pumping millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals underground to break up rock and free gas. At least one operator is currently fracking a well in Bartonville.

1. More of these moratoriums are needed
It may be largely symbolic since there are no permits in the process, but hopefully it will get the residents more involved in deciding their future.

4. Drilling rig fire might burn until mid April
Just an inherent danger and shit happens.

AUSTIN - From Texas Parks and Wildlife Department - Authorities now say a natural gas drilling rig fire that started April 1 in Village Creek State Park near Lumberton should be put out by April 16, if they are able to relieve pressure so they can safely cap the well head and complete other steps as expected.

Before dawn Monday, part of the rig structure collapsed. That caused the flame to shrink to about one tenth its previous size. The plume of flame had been as tall as 150 feet high in early days, but since Monday it has shrunk to around 15 feet high.
