WASHINGTON, D.C. (KXAN) - As the House of Representatives worked past 4:00 a.m. EST Saturday to pass a $60 billion federal spending cut , one provision that stirred heated debate in that early hour was an amendment dealing with Texas and federal funds for education.
North Texas Republican Congressman Michael Burgess added the amendment to the continuing resolution to fund federal government.
The language of Burgess amendment cancelled out a provision that Congressman Lloyd Doggett and eight Democratic colleagues put into the EduJobs bill last summer . Texas's share of the $10 billion dollar bill was $830 million. Doggett's provision was meant to prevent state leaders from using that money to fill gaps in different parts of the budget, and it required Governor Rick Perry to promise he would spend the money on new, and not existing, educational spending.
