WASHINGTON – Plano Republican Sam Johnson joined a growing number of prominent lawmakers today pushing for changes to Social Security in light of the nation's exploding financial problems.


Johnson made his case early in a House subpanel hearing to commemorate the upcoming 75th anniversary of Social Security. He didn't offer specific proposals in his opening statement – other than that taxes shouldn't be raised – but he said the entitlement program's teetering financial future demanded bipartisan action.


“Clearly, the time is now when leaders on both sides have expressed a sincere desire to work together to get something done – for the sake of our economy and Americans' financial security,” said Johnson, the senior Republican on the Ways and Means subcommittee.

1. Republicans have always wanted to kill social security

They have no problem with retirees living on cat food. Congressmen/women have pensions for life so of course they've got theirs. It's yours they want to sacrifice.

First they abandoned the unemployed in the toughest depression ever, and now they want to kick Grandma and Grandpa to the curb. What heartless bastards! :mad:

They could easily save this crucial program if they would make some cuts in defense spending instead. Just kill one of the two wars - or solve our entire budget crisis by killing both of them.

I hope retirees are paying attention.
