White fires up Democrats with heavy focus on Perry

CORPUS CHRISTI — Democrats rallied around gubernatorial candidate Bill White at their state convention Friday night as White hammered Republican Rick Perry, casting him as a part-time governor trying to climb the national political ladder.

"Rick Perry's in it for himself," White said repeatedly during his keynote convention speech before thousands of delegates at the AmericanBank Center.

The speech mirrored much of White's strategy in recent weeks; he has largely focused on Perry's character and leadership style. He zeroed in on state records that show Perry has kept a light official schedule on many business days during this election year, and on taxpayer spending on Perry's western Travis County rental home. The state is paying $9,000 a month in rent for Perry and his family to live in the home while the Governor's Mansion, torched by arson in 2008, is rebuilt.

(snip)

"In our Texas, wages will go up faster, because we invest in people," said White, who entered the convention arena to the sound of "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones after his 21-year-old daughter, Elena, introduced him. Both sprinkled a little Spanish into their remarks.

White is trying to turn Perry's telegenic looks and charisma against him, framing the race as someone who is "good at making commercials" versus someone who is "good at getting things done." He often touts his efforts to work across the ideological spectrum during his six-year tenure as Houston's mayor, which ended in January.

:kick: for all the attendees in Corpus Christi this weekend!

2. Democratic Convention: Bill White Delivers (Oooh-La-La!)

Democratic Convention: Bill White Delivers (Oooh-La-La!)

It’s fair to say that Bill White gave the speech of his life in accepting the Democratic nomination in Corpus Christi on Friday night. Now, ye cynics might say that’s not the highest standard in the annals of political rhetoric—and you’d be right. But, hand to God, it was a fine piece of oratory—and one that suited the moment to a T, drawing a razor-sharp contrast between White and incumbent Gov. Rick Perry. And while it was not delivered with preacherly fury or Obamaesque eloquence, it was the right kind of speech for White to inhabit comfortably: a little funny, a little sarcastic, a little uplifting, and appropriately plainspoken.

Forty-five minutes ahead of schedule, White grinned his way onto the stage to the Rolling Stones’ "Start Me Up" and soaked in cheers from delegates who’d been encouraged, rock-concert style, to surround the stage, sway and whoop and wave their Bill White signs. It was history’s most unlikely Mick Jagger moment, but White—far more comfortable at the podium than he’s looked and sounded in the past—seemed to soak it up before launching into a speech that hit pretty much every note the Democratic candidate needs to hit between now and November.

Of course, nothing could make wonky White feel more at ease than walking into a convention that’s running ahead of schedule. "You know that Democrats are ready when our convention runs 45 minutes early," White quipped as he began—one of his frequent variations from the written text that you can read below in full.

If there were any doubt that White was feeling right at home with his message, it would have been dispelled the moment he delivered one of his indictments of Perry—"We learn that Perry charges taxpayers for a $10,000 a month rented mansion, larger than anything used by prior governors, with chefs and a subscription to Food & Wine magazine."—and then added, with a sly grin, "Oooh-la-la!"

I don’t know about you, but I never thought of Bill White as an "Oooh-la-la" sort of fellow.

9. It was fun for me even as a volunteer
This year would have been a blast too. I got a "like" on facebook for the Perry & White being tied news story from someone I didn't expect it from. That's good news. The governor's race has come up a few times at work, and I always give them a piece of my mind on what a buffoon Perry is and why we'll be better off with White. I work in a republican setting, and not one person has said "you know, I like that Perry." Or maybe it's my red headed passion that they know better than to say that. lol

White rallies Democrats, saying governor is 'in it for Rick Perry'

CORPUS CHRISTI -- Firing up Democrats at their state convention Friday night, former Houston Mayor Bill White portrayed Republican Gov. Rick Perry as a political opportunist who puts himself above the needs of the state. White however, presented himself as a skilled but unflashy public servant who would lead Texas in a new direction.

"Perry's been on the public payroll so long that his state pension is higher than the salaries of most Texans," White said as he appeared before more than 5,000 delegates, party officials and guests.

"But I can assure you of one thing: Though Rick Perry is in it for Rick Perry, I will always be in it for Texas."

Perry, the state's longest-serving governor, is seeking an unprecedented third four-year term.

His public pension is higher than the salaries of most Texans! That says it all. Another hypocrite who rails about government being too big, but he's too happy to suck on that government teat his whole life! Let's wean the sucker! :grr:

14. Yep good stuff
Perry should secede, but he should do it all by himself. We Texans would absolutely let him go.

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot) was absolutely doing the bidding of the Spanish company that was building toll roads.

Funny story about his Facebook friend in Pecos. :)
