Recently, a letter in support of the health care reform law written by 2 local Sisters was published in the local bird cage liner. Yesterday, a horrible letter from a Catholic man who wrote in support of the Bishops was published. While we do have a local Bishop, the other writer did not refer to him, but to the Council of Bishops, so I left the local guy out of it (although he was also in DC lobbying with the rest of them) Here is my letter in support of the 2 Sisters (who I know personally btw):
To the Editor: I stand with Sisters A & B in support of the recently-enacted health care reform law. Unlike the Bishops who lobbied against it, the Sisters have seen first hand what happens when a family cannot afford to access our health care system. While the Bishops were wining & dining politicians in fancy restaurants in Washington, D.C. lobbying against this law because of their self-proclaimed expertise in "moral truths," the Sisters were out in the colonias delivering what health care they could to the poor. While the Bishops drove around in their fancy cars to their nice homes in good neighborhoods, the Sisters were struggling to keep their medical van in running shape with little more than duct tape, glue, and prayers. While the Bishops went to sleep in their nice, comfortable beds, the Sisters comforted parents who had suffered with & worried over their sick children until they could get them to the doctor. While the Bishops spread lies about the abortion provisions of this new law, the Sisters were out there with the poor, making sure they were following up on the advice given to them by their doctors. It seems to me, then, that while the Bishops only wave to the poor from the balcony, it is the Sisters who actually extend their hands and provide relief. If anyone has the expertise in "moral truths" to take a stand on this issue, then I say it is the Sisters. I may be only a Protestant, or worse in the eyes of the Catholic Church--a woman, but I do know that Jesus never asked what someone's stance on abortion was before He performed His miracles of healing. Neither did the Good Samaritan. And I'm not quite sure about this (being a Protestant & a woman & all), but I do believe there are proscriptions in the Bible about lying as well.
