Forget the Alamo
Forget the Alamo
Posted on 14 March 2010 By John Brummett

Our country’s cancerous political and cultural divide has so widened and deepened that right-wingers in Texas want to rewrite American history textbooks to downplay the civil rights movement and insult Abraham Lincoln.

Seven of the 15 members of the Texas Board of Education, joined occasionally by a supposed “moderate,” have been pressing for new right-wing phrasing in social studies texts throughout the public schools of their odd state.

Texas, perhaps you will recall, is the state where the governor, Rick Perry, recently talked openly of secession.

He just got opposed in the Republican gubernatorial primary by one of most conservative Republican members of the U.S. Senate, Kay Bailey Hutchison. He beat her by 21 points by casting her as a dirty liberal because she voted in late 2008 at the behest of George W. Bush’s economic people to save an economy that was collapsing from unfettered conservative financial practices.

Working towards offshoring as soon as we can get it together. Four generations here and my spousal unit is sixth generation. Breaks my heart.

3. Somewhere Latin
My family is very happy when we are far, far south. It will be weird, though, not to have to think about coming "home." I'll be mad right along with the natives and Mexicans. There is no Texas without them.

Happily, most of the teachers I know are rolling their eyes at the State Board of Education's edicts about textbooks. From what I hear, Jefferson is going nowhere.
