Austin businessman and lawyer John T. "Jack" McDonald said Tuesday that he's not going to seek the 2010 Democratic nomination for the U.S. House seat held by Republican Michael McCaul.
McDonald's surprising move — among Democrats, he was the nation's No. 2 early fundraiser among active congressional prospects — could ease McCaul's re-election in Republican-leaning Congressional District 10, which stretches east from Travis County into Harris County.
McDonald filed paperwork in Washington on Dec. 11 indicating he was poised to launch his candidacy.
But he said in a written statement that with the January candidate filing deadline approaching, he'd decided "this is not the right time for me to run. ... This was a difficult decision for me and one I did not make lightly."
