Marc Katz anounces bid for lite guv

By Mike Ward | Tuesday, September 8, 2009, 10:30 AM

Marc Katz can’t help it. He’s gotta tell you. He’s planning to run for lieutenant governor.

Katz, 62, Austin’s self-proclaimed deli king, said he plans to file paperwork to enter the race as a Democrat, hoping to take the Republican-held seat with a populist campaign stressing the need for change.

“We need a whole new deal,” Katz said this morning, after announcing his intentions to make his first bid for statewide public office to supporters over the Labor Day weekend.

“Katz will never quit for Texas,” he added, playing on the theme of his 30-year landmark Austin eatery: “Katz’s Never Kloses.” “There’s no question we’re in one of the most difficult periods for the State of Texas. But I don’t see any urgency (among state leaders). There needs to be some urgency … some vision.

Well the Texas primaries are sure going to be interesting. Two cheeleaders, a musician/comedian and now the self proclaimed deli king. :eyes:

2. I'd say he has an unfair advantage there
I suppose he can make a lot of "in kind" contributions to his campaign.

3. Remember Marc's mayoral campaign?

I'm not sure he broke 100 votes. Lots of press for the restaurant, though.
Somebody good, please step up.

Edit to add the link. It was 7,730 only 13.16 % of the vote. And this was Austin.

4. But maybe
the general electorate of Texas is not as smart as that of Austin? I mean, he sounds like a real committed liberal to me. :)

7. Where do you get committed liberal and Marc Katz?
Marc was one of the more conservative candidates when he ran for Mayor. He did not raise that much money, quite a lot of what he put in was his own bucks. I don't have a lot of confidence in his fundraising ability.

6. Dewhurst announced he's holding still and running for re-election

Dewhurst: I’m in for re-election

By Mike Ward | Tuesday, September 8, 2009, 02:30 PM

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, widely rumored to be eyeing a run for the U.S. Senate, says he’s running for re-election instead.

In a message to supporters this afternoon, Dewhurst capped months of speculation that suggested he might vacate the No. 2 job he has held for six years.

He is the first Republican to announce a race. Earlier today, Austin deli king Marc Katz became the first Democrat to announce he will run for the post.

OK now I see I was confused - Katz is running as a Democrat!!!

9. Dewhurst - maybe not
AAS First Reading blog 9/9/09
Don’t read too much into Dewhurst’s non-move

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst’s low-key proclamation to supporters Tuesday that he would run for re-election next year served as a reminder of just how many issues are up in the air as we head toward the December filing period for the 2010 elections.

First, it’s important to say that the Dewhurst announcement doesn’t mean much. He’s been saying that he is running for re-election. But U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has said that she is going to leave the Senate this fall, and it is still widely expected that Dewhurst will run for her seat when there is an election to fill it, and maybe even get an interim appointment from Gov. Rick Perry to fill it. Tuesday’s announcement from Dewhurst doesn’t change that.

As has been the case for months, everyone is waiting to see what Hutchison is going to do. And even though she said several weeks ago that she would leave the Senate this fall, she has not yet followed that up with a specific timetable. And there is some of speculation out there that, while she will stay in the governor’s race, she will not give up the Senate seat to run.

Waiting for Kay to go....
