1. Warranties have usually been a con on consumers
If a product is going to fail it usually does so in the first 90 days. Those are normally covered by the manufacturer. Anything beyond that is usually a con that the stores always build in for more profit on the item.

We never buy an extended warranty.

2. I''ve had the opposite experience
maybe that was true in the past, but today I wouldn't buy an appliance without an extended warranty. I've had to replace my satellite radio 3 times already & wouldn't have been able to do it if I hadn't "wasted" $25 on the warranty. (the radios at the time cost more than $100; the current one I have is still going strong, so I have no idea what they cost now)

3. I guess it depends on the item and the company issuing the warranty
I would imagine with satellite radio where the company makes more money from the subscription than the item, it behooves them to get you back to being a subscriber. Otherwise they lose their stream of subscriber money.
