An amendment to Senate Bill 1569 would have enabled Texas to access additional federal money to cover another 13 weeks of jobless benefits for some 80,000 Texans who will begin exhausting their benefits this summer. Texas only became eligible for the extended benefits money last month when the state's rising unemployment rate passed a certain threshold.
The unemployment bill died Tuesday in the House slowdown.
But the technical tweak needed to get the money was added the $2.4 billion supplemental appropriations bill that cleared the Senate on Wednesday.
It opens the door for an estimated $180 million to $450 million for the extended benefits.
