As a life long Texan, it shames me to say that Texas sucks, but it does. Look at Democratic State Senator Shapleigh's report "Texas on the Brink". He has put this report together every two years and the results are not pretty.

My keys issues is insurance and electricity. Since the republicans took over the House, our insurance rates are the highest in the nation, twice as high as the national average. Electricity deregulation has been a HUGE failure and has cost us dearly. College tuition has doubled. The report has more details.

And all of this while the gop was in charge.

So, yes, Texas sucks, but it was the gop who did it and we have to fix it.

3. Electricity is a big sore spot for me too.
I'm already dreading having to turn on my AC. Our rates, except Austin, are some of the highest in the country too. I remember all the TV ads years ago stating that we would have lower rates with deregulation... yeah, right! :)

4. That's okay. We Texan's can say that to ourselves. We can work to
fix it.

That said . . .

I'll be damned if I let others say it.

7. Right on!
One of the major reasons we are in the mess we are in right now is due to the DNC's abandonment of Texas (except when they need money). They treat us like shit, give us the crappy hotel at the convention, the crappiest seating, then turn around, say it's all our fault we can't turn Texas blue & bash away. Until next week when they need money. FUCK THEM.

And don't send money out of state to help others in their causes either. I know a lot of us sent $ to help defeat & then overturn Prop 8. Have we ever been thanked for that? Take a look at the bashing threads, & you'll have your answer. So if you asked for my money & got it, then turned around & bashed my state, FUCK YOU. Hope that $20 went a long way, cuz it's the last you'll ever get from me.

I've told y'all once, I've told y'all a million times: Stop sending your $$ to the DNC. It's on a one-way trip out of this state. Keep your $$ local, give to the candidates directly. That's the only hope we have of taking back our state.

10. Hmmm., I was wondering why I would NEVER see anybody...

from the DNC helping our Democratic choices for governor, senate, etc. But, Pres. Obama's group is in Austin now, so aren't they going to help us with the grassroots effort in turning the state blue???

-Texas was at the top (not bottom),for having the most uninsured children, but hopefully that's changing since President Obama is in office.

-Also, TXU really has messed up a lot of budgets. For my 1431 sq. ft. home, I pay from $240-$280 per month in the summer.

In a way, I have to agree that Texas sucks in some ways, but I think it's because we have lazy Democratic leadership. Why is it that we don't hear from our Democratic leadership until it's time to vote??? Not one Dem. representative spoke against TXU and the PUC. Not one. I didn't hear one Dem. representative speak up about college tuition going up, or about our uninsured children. Exactly, why is it that we don't have representatives like a Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Maxine Waters, etc.??? We have one representative who has been in Washington, D.C. since I was a child, and I have yet to see ANYTHING she's done that has made a real difference for Texas. Maybe I'm wrong, and I'm sorry if I am, but I just don't see it.

of course the entrenched power structure which walks around apologizing for being democrats were able to stay in control. Next opportunity is 2010.

6. It really doesn't suck.
How miserable you must be to wake up every morning in a state that sucks.

When someone has a boil on their ass, you don't say that person sucks (Rush excluded). You say that boil sucks.
Same thing.

8. And we are one of the few states with "tort reform," which Repubs argue will lower
ins. rates. I've told conservatives that's a lie 'til I'm blue in the face. But they don't believe.

Supposed tort reform has no measurable effect on insurance rates at all. Witness Texas. One of the few states with tort reform laws, and one of the highest ins. rates in the nation (which went higher after the tort reform laws were passed). Of course, conservatives would ALWAYS argue, "They'd be even HIGHER if we DIDN'T have tort reform....ya'll!"
