UT gets $15 million gift for history center
Research unit to be named for former Gov. Dolph Briscoe in recognition of his generosity.

A $15 million donation from a former governor of Texas to the Center for American History at the University of Texas promises to elevate the center's scholarship, collections and reputation, officials said Monday.

(snip)
Briscoe's donation nearly triples the center's endowment. Carleton said the gift would strengthen and elevate the center across the board, by expanding the purchase of historical collections, funding travel for visiting scholars, and underwriting research and publishing.

Richard Szary, director of the Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said a gift of this size would be transformative for any institution except for perhaps the largest ones, such as the Library of Congress. But even for the largest institutions, Szary said, it would allow an expansion and acceleration of their work. Few repositories have collections on the scale of the UT center's, he added.

(snip)
"There's something different about being a Texan," Briscoe said. "We have a tremendous heritage."

Oh and nowhere in the article did it say specifically, but Dolph was and is a Democrat. How much money do you think the bushies are going to give any university?

1. I have lost any warm feelings for UT.
It has one of the richest endowments of any University system in the world, and it basically told UTMB to go fuck yourself.

Jaworski and TFA Sue UT Board of Regents

Joe Jaworski, coming off a strong yet unsuccessful run for the Texas Senate, is coming into the public eye some more with the suit he is carrying for the Texas Faculty Association. From his law firm's public advisory:

Galveston attorney Joe Jaworski will file a lawsuit on behalf of the Texas Faculty Assn. (TFA) and other plaintiffs alleging that University of Texas Board of Regents and other UT officials violated the Texas Open Meetings Act when they held a closed meeting and conference phone calls before they announced the layoffs of 3,800 employees of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in the wake of Hurricane Ike.

Way to go Joe Jaworski!
