Texas Thugs Trash Obama Supporter Car on eve of Early Voting
BREAKING Glass - Texas Thugs Trash Obama Supporter Car on eve of Early Voting-bekosiluvu's Diary 10/20/08

In western Hays County, Texas, at around 8PM Sunday night 19 October, thugs trashed my car while I was having dinner with some friends.

Out in the country. Miles from anywhere.

My "Obama 08" bumper sticker was torn off the right rear bumper, a 20-lb rock was dropped through the back window, 2 stolen Obama yard signs were shoved through the gaping hole in the window, and a cryptic almost "OBAHA" (or something...) was scrawled in orange spray-paint on the drivers side front and back doors and windows.
(snip)

I have to hand it to the Hays county deputies for getting out to the scene of the crime quickly, and making sure to dust everything for fingerprints -- and, particularly, (in these dark days) for taking the matter seriously.

Damn those racist thugs! I hope the fingerprints turn up a match. This is inexcusable. This is a form of a hate crime. :grr:

2. Hate-filled attacks on Obama have many roots

Hate-filled attacks on Obama have many roots
(snip)
Analysts see anger rooted in a number of societal factors, some cultural, some political.

"A great many people think they're about to lose power. The world is changing around them, and they can't stop that change. So their anger is boiling over," said Mark Potok, the director of the intelligence project at the Southern Poverty Law Center , which tracks hate groups.

That's the best description of the disease as I have seen.

3. I'm afraid the violence may get worse AFTER the election.
I know a lot of racists in my part of the country who will go completely nucking futz if a Black man is elected President.

In a way, it is amusing to see their heads explode, but I hate to see innocent victims suffer because of the stupidity of others.

Just imagine what it must be like in those parts of Alabama and Mississippi where they are still fighting the Civil War. There is no way to predict what will happen there.

4. Send in the national guard
I agree with you Cosmik, but if we have to replay the civil rights era we will.

We will not go back and those people who are spewing this racist hate filled crime will pay. If you the crime - you do the time.

5. Until that time comes
I will continue to cynically look at the bright side:

Their heads are going to explode!

And that, by itself, is a form of justice. I believe that racists deserve to feel the suffering they cause. And the anxiety they feel as a result of being governed by a black man is not even a tiny fraction of the anxiety they cause with their Neanderthal behavior.

6. These "people" have become what they detest/despise..... They ARE savages.
I no longer consider them a part of the Human Race. They label certain races as savages, yet they are showing us that THEY ARE THE SAVAGES.

Their hatred and bigotry comes out and "rears its ugly head" to intimidate others.

I hope the authorities find the perpetrators of this hate crime and throw the book at them. Hell they can even throw the 20-lb. rock they used to damage the car.

7. Another explanation
The Texas Observer 10/16/08
California, You Got Nothin’
October 16th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

This week the Sacramento County, California, Republican Party had to yank from its Web site some highly offensive content, including a call to “Waterboard Barack Obama” and a statement that “The Only Difference Between Obama and Osama is BS.” Pretty bad stuff.

But never think that California can out-wingnut Texas.

Take for example the Web site of the Hays County GOP. There you will find a John Birch Society-style menu of far-right fantasies, racially-charged videos, and some bizarro conspiracy theoriesUnder the banner “Things You Need to See Today” is a link entitled “Understanding Obama: The Making of a Fuehrer.” That leads to an essay on a site called Faithfreedom.org that compares Obama to Hitler and Khomeini. The author thinks Obama has something called a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Here’s a choice passage:

From Saddam to Osama, to Hitler, to Stalin, to Khomeini, to Mao and to Kim Jong Ill , it is wounded childhood that causes NPD. Obama’s chaotic childhood and his continuous struggle to find his identity make him a prime candidate for NPD.

Wingnut alert - wingnut alert. I'm going out on a limb and saying that the Hayes GOP is pretty damn crazy and very capable of doing damage to a car with Obama stickers in Hayes.

8. Hays county is where
Wimberley and San Marcos are? About 10 years ago we thought about moving there. The Austin area wasn't really a good practical choice but a nice excuse for a vacation and look-around. Met some nice people but some seemed a little 'intense' if that's the right word.
Very sorry about what happened to you.

9. I've lived in Hays County for nearly 13 years.
This horrible crime truly isn't typical of the people who live here. Yes, there are bigots and "Take Back Texas" types, as well as the kinds of folks you would expect to find in rural areas of Texas, but Dripping Springs, Wimberley, San Marcos, and other parts of the county are also known for fairly educated, moderate to liberal artisans or people who appreciate artisans. ;) The closer you get to Blanco, probably not so much.

I think this crime was probably committed by some rural bigoted teens. I know a lot of Republicans in this area and I think they would decry this sort of behavior. There aren't a lot of people of color at Dripping Springs High School, for example, but those who did attend were often some of the most popular kids in school while my kids were going there. Whether I was at the post office or the hair salon or the grocery store, I've never heard any racist or bigoted comments and my children rarely heard it at school.

So give us another look! :hi:

10. Hays is actually trending very blue
I agree with Longhorn don't judge Hayes by this incident. Hell we've had hate crimes in Austin too. Hate happens when the other side gets scared.

For example when Texas was put through the wringer of the hate amendment (i.e. making same sex marriages illegal) Hayes was the only county outside of Travis, where Austin is located that voted against the stupid amendment.

So I'm sticking up for our little sibling county Hayes - they rock. :yourock:

Also the car smashing crime didn't happen to me. I was posting a diary from DailyKos about someone else.

:hi:

11. Sonia, I Feel For You
Sonia, I feel for you. I hope the sheriff catches the little dears.

My personal suspicion is that it was young right-wing testosterone run amok. You may rightly disagree with me, but I hope that the Hays County DA sees fit to make the little cherubs make amends not only by paying for the damages, but perhaps force the little wingers to enlist in the Army (An institution that chickenhawks profess to support but where they serve themselves).

Good luck.

13. I hope the sheriff catches the creeps - but it's not my car
Some confusion on the thread since the story is written in the first person tense. The hate crime happened to some other good soul from Hayes. I was just re-posting the story to get the word out. The link in the OP goes to a DailyKos diary.

If I ever found my car trashed out like this - well if they think I'm active now - they would be in big trouble how much more hell I could raise. They better not go there!

Thanks for the good thoughts though - let's just send them to the real owner of the car.

Election vandals caught

By Andrea Lorenz | Friday, October 24, 2008, 03:23 PM

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office said they have arrested suspects in connection with a recent complaint of criminal mischief that happened involving damage to a car because of its Obama bumper sticker.
(snip)
After investigating the two incidents, the sheriff’s office arrested a 15-year-old male and 12-year-old male on Thursday and another 12-year-old male on Friday. The 15-year-old, who remains in the Hays County juvenile detention center, has been charged with two felony counts of criminal mischief and one county of organized criminal activity.

Felony counts of criminal mischief - was it worth in punk?

15. Wow, punk kids is right
I wonder what their parents think about this. Where did they learn to be such Hatred of the black race?.?.?

Of course I don't know what color their skin color is but something tells me they are probably white. I guess we'll never know for sure since they are juveniles. I hope the woman who suffered the damages to her car can get the kids parents to pay for the $4000 worth of damages.
