Georgetown sued over protest ordinance
Requiring demonstrators to get a permit a month in advance is too restrictive, opponents say.

The Texas Civil Rights Project has sued the City of Georgetown in federal court, alleging the city's ordinances regulating demonstrations is unconstitutional, an attorney for the group said today.

A small group of demonstrators gathered on the sidewalk in front of the City Council chambers Jan. 8 to protest the council's efforts to write a policy that would require anyone doing business with the city to prove that they do not hire illegal immigrants.

Antonio Diaz, one of the protesters, said Georgetown police stopped the group from demonstrating because they had not obtained a permit to protest. Jim Harrington, an attorney with Texas Civil Rights Project, said the Georgetown ordinance requires a permit be signed by the city manager and that it be applied for at least 30 days before the demonstration.

:applause: for our good friends at the The Texas Civil Rights Project!

1. I guess the folks in Williamson County
don't like it that Austin is moving north & they'll have to deal with minorities.

(said from personal experience; my cousin moved from Austin for just that reason & tried talking me into moving to Georgetown so I could live among white people instead of the Mexicans. :eyes: )

2. White flight - where are you going to run?
That's sad dg. But I'm sure your cousin still likes being close to the culture in Austin huh? And I'm sure they love the lower cost of goods etc. I know, I know it's not your fault.

Hey suggest to them that Iowa you hear is 97% white and they might like it even more there.

3. Oh no, he doesn't like that "type" of culture at all
seriously, we're so far apart on the political spectrum & world views, it's like we're not even from the same gene pool. He's 12 years older than I am. My other cousin, L, (the one with 5 siblings) has the same issues with her older siblings as well--more than 10 years separates her from her oldest brother & she & I are the same age; yup, tail-end charlies & late in life "surprises" here :hi: ).

I often wonder if this disparity in world views is due to the fact that my older cousins grew up in at the tail end of Jim Crow, when it was okay to use the n-word & such, as well as have the attitude that if it isn't white bread, it's no good. L & I grew up post-Civil Rights Movement, were in elementary school during the Energy Crunch & 1st Earth Day, & so have a broader world view, lean more to the left politically, love multi-culturalism, etc. In fact, we're pacifists, but we'll kill you if you get between us & homemade flour tortillas & tamales. :grr: ;)

Anyway, I'm sure he's headed soon to whiter parts of the country. He just can't stand being around minorities, well those that don't "act white" IYKWIM. :eyes:

4. homemade flour tortillas & tamales
My neighbors, good people that they are, brought over some home made tamales for us yesterday. They absolutely make the best tamales I've ever had in Austin. They own a popular restaurant here in Austin, but they don't serve these tamales there. The homemade ones are only for family. They were so good. It's not a new year until you've had tamales, damn it!

7. A ton of work
Como decía mi abuela… Tamaladas
If you’re making tamales, make it count and make it a party.

That's why they're so good.

5. Williamson County = Creepy White Extremist Fascist County North of Austin
Williamson County is a very very evil place. Don't ever make the mistake of being black or Mexican and getting pulled over there, because the cops are known for their "physical force"... I dated a guy who used to get harassed by the cops because they thought his car was "ugly as shit," as one cop out it to him. They kept following him and ticketing him at every turn (but that car WAS pretty ugly...)

8. No doubt about the Wilco police
Unfortunately the Travis cops are only slightly better as far as racial profiling. The only thing that is slightly better here is our D.A. isn't trying to send everyone in jail to the electric chair.

By the way welcome to the DU forum J R! :hi:

9. Hell, my mom got stopped....
for a bullshit minor infraction in downtown Round Rock and the the cops were total jerks!

I was in the car behind her following her and stepped out of the car to find out what was up and they practically drew guns on me! ("GET BACK IN THE CAR, MA'AM!")

It's not just minorities there. Wilco cops are JERKS.

10. A *month's* notice?
By the time you've waited that out, "they" have already gotten away with whatever it is and moved on to the next thing....

11. Yes total bullshit
But that's G.W.'s America. Where you free speech rights are limited to your house. And even then they can invade that by tapping your phone and snooping through your e-mail.

What part of free speech don't they understand?
