Talibornagain attack HEB over diversity
From Equality Texas:

n Thursday, June 15th, a San Antonio Christian radio talk show host for KSLR radio began an assault on the H-E-B grocery chain for its sponsorship of San Antonio's PrideFest 2006.

Adam McManus urged his listeners to flood the H-E-B website with protests, and to talk with in-store managers and ask them to reconsider sponsorship of PrideFest.

H-E-B has a long-standing commitment to honor the diversity of their partners (employees) and the communities they serve.

4. Because if they stopped focusing on others...
and spent some time really examining themselves they'd realize and have to deal with what sad, limiting lives they lead. Can't have that.

5. HEB is a business!
They are politically neutral, although the family itself is very religious. The oldest son who was supposed to take over the business was even an evangelical preacher for a while & stepped down from a leadership position at HEB so that he could devote more time to preaching. "Mr. Charles" now runs the operation.

Kudos to HEB for recognizing & valuing diversity among its customers & employees!

8. Maybe we should start a Christian grocery store?
It would be run by Christians, cater to Christians, and would serve Christian food, with Christian dancing for entertainment.

It would be so, uh, Christian.

9. The San Antonio paper on Saturday
carried an article about the boycott. I had to laugh because some woman was quoted in there as saying she'd never ever ever shop at HEB again because they sent a $300 check to PrideFest and upon being told that, well, um, Whole Foods also is supportive of the gay community (the article didn't say how), she said she wouldn't shop there anymore either. Not too many other choices in SA for grocery shopping & I'm sure those wouldn't want to alienate their gay customers either.

10. Do they still have
Kroger and Albertson's down there?

They did when I lived there. Yes, Albertson's-- they of the kicking the strikers in the teeth a few years ago.

That woman would feel VERY comfortable shopping in a shithole like that, methinks.

12. No to either
both closed up & left town. I think Sun Harvest has a couple of locations but they're expensive health food/organic stores. I guess she's going to have to grow her own food if she wants to feed her family.

13. well it's a good thing because HEB is the only game in town
here in Corpus. Well there is Walmart but I don't shop there. I can't imagine how low the quality of groceries would be at Walmart anyway. So good for HEB.

16. What HEB Ought To Do...
What HEB ought to do is find out which charities that the McManus fellow was promoting, how much HEB had given to those charities, then consider giving its charitable contributions to someone else.

I keep wondering what would happen if some of these televangelists and talk show hosts got a reputation as being financial Typhoid Larrys.
