Filibuster for Freedom, Juneteenth (6/18 and 19), Galveston
June 19, 2006 will be the 141st anniversary of the arrival of the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to the shores of Texas through Galveston on June 19, 1865.

David Van Os will mark the occasion by conducting a marathon Citizens' Filibuster for Freedom in Galveston on June 18 and 19.

"One of America's greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln, struck an everlasting blow against tyranny when he issued the Emancipation Proclamation to liberate America from the scourge of human slavery. Today another president, disgracing the Republican Party name under which Lincoln got elected, and even worse, disgracing the Texas legacy that he claims, is establishing tyranny as governmental policy through actions such as unconstitutional wiretapping, prisoner torture, lying the nation into war, and helping corporate robber barons prey on the people.

Here in Texas, the junior partners that he left in charge in Austin follow their leader by looking the other way in response to these depredations. We the people of Texas are a strong people who demand respect for our rights and liberties. Let your defiance of tyranny be heard. Join me in the Citizens' Filibuster for Freedom on June 18 and 19 in Galveston."

David Van Os

3. I think Hank Gilbert
but it may be only for the Courthouse Tour beginning at the Galveston County Courthouse on Tuesday morning at 9.

Johnny Shelton is mobilizing the GC troops, Tom G and Sylvia and probably some more of the BAND, Sherrie Matula is spreading the word among the techer's union, Marcia Kushner just called me and said she'd be joining us for the duration...

And I'm sure many more.

I had a fantastic time at the first one at the State capitol and wish I could make this one. If you can go...do...you won't regret it. :)

From http://www.galveston.com/history

Juneteenth,or June 19th, is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery.

This news was announced on June 19, 1865, in Galveston Island, Texas, when Union Major General Gordon Granger announced freedom for all slaves in the Southwest, the last major vestige of slavery following the end of the Civil War, through the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation. This occurred more than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and enforced by President Abraham Lincoln.
