Now if we can just get a few of the right people elected to the SDEC, the steering committee meetings might be something I look forward to attending.
No lie, someone actually said this at a steering committee meeting...."I don't think it's a good idea for the SD to caucus at the CEC meeting to elect County committee members by popular vote and screw everything up like they did last time. I think the committee members should be appointed, not elected."
Folks, the SDEC members aren't our prom kings and queens. When you see red over the state chair or your county chair if you live in a major metropolitan area b/c of the lack of activity in your area it's often not their fault. If you don't know your SDEC person or their opponents you ought to get to know them before the convention and ask them what their plan is to turn out the vote in their senate district. Look at the voting returns for your Senate District at
http://elections.sos.state.tx.us/elchist.exe. Look at the November candidate slate in your senate district. Are you happy with it? If you like the candidates in your SD call them and ask if they were recruited and if so, by whom. One Democratic Party candidate for Senator in my area is an absolute joke and the senate district that could have elected a Democratic Senator has no Democratic Party candidate at all.
Oh and while you're getting to know your SDEC person, ask them why the SDEC legislative report card was never released. It should have been released at least a month before the candidate filing deadline. The DINOs would have had a much tougher row to hoe in the primary had the SDEC legislative committee done their job.
Perhaps when the Party was the dominant force in the state we could elect people to the SDEC in recognition of their years of showing up and taking a bow at Democratic Party events. If that SDEC person seemed to have delusions of grandeur about their job description it didn't really matter b/c there were enough people to get the job done without their leadership. But now, at this critical time, we need SDEC persons who work with us and not SDEC persons who slap us upside the head when we want to think outside the box. Again, your SDEC person's years of service to the party are not what makes a good SDEC person. Ask what they plan to do to turn out the vote between now and November.
Now not every Senate District has an SDEC member that needs to be replaced at this convention so please consider this as an alternative - ask the person elected to the rules committee to push for SDEC term limitations. Two terms are enough. If the SDEC person is really doing their job they ought to be so worn out after two terms that they'd gladly let someone else from their Senate District step up to the plate.
