Just had a horrible thought about the PPC meeting at the convention...
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 12:07 PM by VelmaD
Ok, somebody tell me I'm too paranoid. Since the Progressive Populist Caucus postponed endorsing a candidate for State Chair until later, likely til our convention Caucus...there's something I just figured out to worry about this morning. In 2004 we got a TON of new members at our convention Caucus and I can't remember whether the new members got to vote that day or not. If they did...what's the stop any of the Chair candidates from trying to pack our Caucus meeting and influence the endorsement vote?

Like I said...tell me I'm too paranoid.

1. I'd been thinking about joining
our local PPC for some time, and I'm a delegate to the state convention. I didn't realize the PPC endorsed one Democrat over another. Texas Democratic Women specifically do not endorse as an organization. Instead we encourage our members to work for their candidates as individuals, then get behind the Democratic slate for the general election. Boyd Richie is a TDW member, but he can not be endorsed by TDW, and membership in TDW is no guarantee of votes at convention. We have a diverse group of members with very strong opinions -- I wouldn't dream of trying to tell any of them they have to vote a certain way. When Charlie Urbina Jones was a guest at a recent Coastal Bend TDW (Corpus Christi) meeting, we made sure literature about the other declared candidates (Boyd Richie and Glen Maxey) was available and our chapter president restated our non-endorsement policy to the members and guests present (many will be delegates to the state convention). It makes for a more fun and interesting meeting when there's no arm-twisting. Glen Maxey is scheduled to speak at our May 30th meeting.

3. Let me personally encourage you to join the
PPC! I am the new membership chair. You can register online at http://www.texaspopulists.com/membership.

PPC is a caucus within the Democratic party, with the specific mission or "reclaiming the Texas Democratic Party's historic purpose of achieving a more just society by returning our Party and our government to the people first." More information about our beliefs is available here: http://www.texaspopulists.com/beliefs. With that in mind, it makes sense for us to endorse the candidate who we feel will be the most likely to work with us towards that goal.

Please pm me with your name after you join so I can follow up and contact you about opportunities to get involved.

4. And none of us is required...
to vote for the candidate the Caucus endorses as far as I can tell.

6. My understanding is that the PPC does not direct
our members how to vote. I will check on that though.

7. Frankly, Linda I agree with you
However, I didn't think I'd be able to get a vote to not endorse so instead asked that the caucus postpone the vote until June 9. Come on, join us and lead the charge to not endorse;-)

2. Isn't that the way endorsement meetings are SUPPOSED to work?
