Houston Peace and Justice Center Dinner with speakers
I got this in my email. Sounds like an interesting event, particularly the Nobel Laureate, Aldolfo Perez Esquivel.

Aldolfo Perez Esquivel, 1980 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, will speak at a reception before the Houston Peace and Justice Center's awards dinner this Friday, November 11. The wine/beer & cheese/fruit reception is free to everyone who registers for the dinner.

Both events are on the second floor of the Hilton Hotel on the UH campus. The reception, hosted by the UH Graduate School of Social Work (GSAS), begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Shamrock Room; Senor Esquivel will speak briefly at 6. There will also be a performance by sara mamani grupo, a musical ensemble traveling with him from Argentina.

The dinner is in the Waldorf Astoria Room. It begins at 7 p.m. National honoree and keynote speaker is UT Professor of Journalism Bob Jensen. Houston-based honorees are State Representative Garnet Coleman, Sissy Farenthold, and immigrant rights activist Maria Jimenez.

Esquivel won the Nobel Peace Prize for his championing of human rights during the "dirty war" in Argentina during the 1970s, during which more than 30,000 people were disappeared. An architect and sculptor by profession, in 1974 he began to run Servicio Paz and Justicia, which is headquartered in Buenos Aires but works elsewhere in Latin America as well. In 1977 he was imprisoned without charge. Released in 1978, he remained under police supervision until 1980.

Reservations for the reception and dinner need to be made by tomorrow
(Tuesday) evening. Dinner tickets are $50; there are some subsidized seats for low income attendees. Call ASAP Herb Rothschild, 713.861.2494. If you are coming to the reception, please also call the GSAS reservation number, 713.743.9968, and leave your name, number, and the number planning to attend.
