I know we're all busy, but if you have a few minutes....
to send an email...

begin

I got really pissed off over a relatively minor thing last night, but dammit! All these little minor things add up!

I was flipping back and forth between ch11 and ch13's special Katrina evacuee coverage. Tom Koch on KTRK 13was introducing a piece with the police chief, regarding security, due to people's fears about having so many people taking refuge here.

Here is how he introduced the piece:

With so many evacuees INVADING Houston...

INVADING???? WHAT THE FUCK??? :wtf:

These people are NOT INVADING us! They have lost everything, they have suffered an unspeakable tragedy, they have fought for survival, and they have arrived at what they thought was a hospitable community waiting to welcome them and comfort them. Then they catch a glimpse of the television and hear that they are NOT our guests. They are NOT our new neighbors. They are NOT extended family. They are INVADERS.

What the HELL ever happened to journalistic objectivity? I know it's been long gone, but this is just another example of it.

I imagine if I was a refugee feeling a little bit of hope after the horror I'd been through, hearing that I was an invader would have felt like such an insult to me.

end

So anyway, if this pisses you off as much as me, here's their "contact us" page: http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/aboutus/

1. WOT? No football?
How long before the complaining begins that their stadium is being used to house the suffering instead of the planned football games?

8. No one plays football in the Astrodome any more
as far as I know. The Texans, Rice University Owls, and University of Houston Cougars all have their own stadiums. The Astros baseball team also has its own stadium. The only games I know of being played in the Astrodome are high school playoff games. So I seriously doubt anyone is going to be complaining about the Astrodome not being available for football.

Email him and let him know that being a sociopath is NOT acceptable behavior, and if he engages in it, we'll make his life a misery. Shame!

10. The Katrina evacuees are our INVITED GUESTS.
We need to each do our best to treat them as such, get involved at whatever level we can, and IGNORE the idiots who think otherwise. The good-hearted and generous people in this city far outnumber the soulless creeps like that.

11. Oh, that's nothing..Dallas police chief has already labeled them "violent"

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/katrina/stories/090305dnmetkatchaos.1cccdfd6.html

Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle said, "We're hoping for the best and preparing for the worst," about the security situation caused by thousands of beleaguered people flocking downtown. "We don't know what kinds of populations we'll be getting on the buses. New Orleans has historically been a violent city. But we will keep the residents of Dallas safe."

---------------------------------
Given Dallas' recent history of increased crime stats, this guy has NO FUCKING BUSINESS making any comments about the refugees heading towards Dallas or their city. Maybe he ought to be reassuring the refugees that he will protect THEM from Dallas' violence.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dallas#Crime

The crime rate in Dallas has been ranked second in the country for large cities from 1998 to 2003. Most of the cities nieghborhoods are relatively immune to the more violent crimes which tend to be concentrated within a few blocks of major expressways and around garden-style apartment complexes. Dallas' crime rate has been ranked 1st from 1998-2004. In '95, there were a record 280 murders. Now, Dallas usually averages 230-235 slayings a year.
