Updated Hurricane Help info for Dallas: Info, Donations. Lotsa details.
1) Wanna do more than give money? Can you donate your time?? Even an hour...

Update - Samuel Grand Rec Center - all have been evacuated...However, there remains a NEED for volunteers across the street at St Luke's Community Center. They have multiple rooms sorting through clothes...They welcome volunteers 900am-9pm... They are collecting clothing for all age groups...There is a BIG NEED for NEW underwear all age groups, BIG NEED for MENS clothes including shoes.

A HELPFUL HINT in expediting the distribution process in donating clothes. Place one size in each bag --- and it would be really great if you could mark the bag with size and Identify Men's, Women or Children... Clothing items are immediately placed out for the evacuees to get ...in fact I thought a woman next to me was volunteering to sort clothes...She was a disaster victim getting clothes...

These stranded people are just like us...Do you have any clothes you can donate?

2) Donate a Month's Lodging ....from Moonlady News
The owners of the Quality Inn at Market Center have found themselves the hosts of about 350 refugees from Hurricane Katrina. About 100 of those are children. Although they expected to be able to return to their homes yesterday and today, they are stranded here. Some of the families have no access to cash and only brought a change of clothes and not much else. Anything you can do to help is appreciated.

Many are trying to find temporary jobs until (and if) they can return home. The hotel has turned the ballroom into a children's play area and is
making their guest rooms available at the lowest possible rate. They have posted a note on their outdoor sign and strangers have been coming to the desk to pay for a month's lodging for families they've never met, providing some stability for the family.

A local Lions Club donated $1000 to host a buffet for all the guests Wednesday night at the hotel. If you have resources, or connections to
resources, please contact the above numbers or email and make a difference here in our community for families who fled the storm. The biggest needs are food, clothing and money/jobs.

3) Wilshire Quick Response Missions Project; Donations Needed; Wilshire Baptist Church 4316 Abrams/ 1 Block N Mockingbird 75214

Thurs Fri Sat & Sun; Donations to be taken to Lousiana on Sunday Eve. Reply to 214.452.3100 Main Number; Kathy - 214.452.3100

Mark Wingfield at (214) 452-3128 or mwingfield@wilshirebc.org

From the church minister:

Wilshire will partner with University Baptist Church of Baton Rouge, La., to provide much-needed resources to refugees who have sought shelter in Baton Rouge. Many have come to Baton Rouge with only the clothes they were wearing. The storm has taken everything else. Jay Hogewood, former Wilshire staff member, is pastor of University Baptist Church. This congregation has the manpower to distribute resources to refugees, but they need our help in providing certain items.

There is an urgent need for the following:

- Cash donations to allow bulk purchase of clothing and bedding. Mark contributions Baton Rouge Relief Project and place in the
offering plate or bring to church office. This is the preferred method of help (because its more adaptable to the specific needs).

- NEW clothing for children, youth and adults. Please do not bring used clothing. We do not have time to sort through used clothing.

- NEW bedding items such as sleeping bags, pillows and sheets. Again, we cannot accept used bedding items.

- Small toiletry items to make into toiletry kits. Hotel-size bottles of shampoo, bars of soap, tubes of toothpaste, toothbrushes,
combs, etc., are needed to make into individual kits.

4) Buckner Baptist Benevolences is donating 5,000 pairs of new shoes for us to deliver to Baton Rouge. The shoes, clothing, toiletries and bedding items will be delivered to Baton Rouge on Monday, Sept. 5., in two large trucks. Please bring all donated items to the church no later than 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4.

Volunteers are needed to (a) load shoes from the Buckner warehouse, (b) sort, box and load donated items Sunday evening and (c) receive donations at the church this Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A second volunteer is needed to drive a truck to Baton Rouge on Monday.

Given scale of relief efforts (since developments last night. Dallas is now expecting about 12,000 refugees), the American Red Cross needs everyone to undertake a few hours of formal training before they can volunteer at ReUnion or any other Red Cross Center. So BEFORE you go to Reunion, please go to the Dallas Convention Center: 650 S Griffen Street, Dallas, TX, 75202: http://www.dallasconventioncenter.com/contact/contact.asp. You can try to call the center at: 214 939 2700 or the Red Cross at 214 678 4800, but it is impossible to get through on these lines. I therefore suggest that you just go directly to the Convention Center. There will be a volunteer receiving area set up after 8am Friday morning. Just let people know that you wish to receive training so that you can volunteer to work with the refugees at ReUnion.

Obviously, with the influx of the refugees to Dallas overnight, people are in desperate need of more physical donations. There are physical donation Centers being set up all over N. Dallas. What the Red Cross said people are in most need of are: underwear; socks; shoes (the people coming off the buses this morning almost all had shoes that were totally destroyed because of the flood waters); toiletries; female hygiene products; canned goods; water; and things to keep the children occupied - colouring books, simple toys, jump ropes, etc....

Thanks!

Dallas Animal Services is gearing up to help the animals that may come in to Reunion Arena, building dog runs and cat condos on site THIS WEEKEND so families can take care of their animals and not have to put them in a shelter.

Food Donations Accepted at Dallas Fire Stations

DFR teams up with North Texas Food Bank

FOOD DRIVE BEGINS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

Dallas Fire-Rescue is teaming up with the North Texas Food Bank in
order to initiate a food drive that will benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. Members of the public who wish to contribute to the hurricane relief effort can stop by their neighborhood fire station and drop-off non-perishable food items in NTFB
collection boxes. A full donation list is posted on www.ntxfoodbank.org
The food drive will continue until September 18, 2005.

Food and funds donated to the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) will support Katrina relief efforts locally, across the state and in the Gulf States impacted. The NTFB is a staging area, providing relief to those Texas Food Banks serving evacuees.

The North Texas Food Bank distributes food to 400 member agencies in 13 North Texas counties.

The North Texas Food Bank is a member of America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network.

Visit www.ntxfoodbank.org to learn how donations of food and funds are supporting this massive relief effort.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*<>*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I attempted to drop off several large bags of towels, sheets, pillows, personal toiletry items and women's clothing at Grauwyler Rec Center and was turned away. Avoid bringing donated items to any center manned by the Red Cross. They are so overwhelmed with the logistics of feeding and housing the refugees that they cannot deal with attending to anything else. They have orders to turn all
donated goods away. They will accept financial contributions only, n
any amount.

The Salvation Army Shelter at 5302 Harry Hines Boulevard will gladly
and gratefully accept these donated items, and items will be given directly to hurricane refugees who need them. I noticed that many families with young children were crammed into the shelter... things like used toys, video games, diapers, etc. would probably be greatly appreciated. These folks have nothing to do except stand or sit around aimlessly in an air-conditioned, crowded space, so anything that would occupy their attention and get their minds off the
tragedy would be helpful.

NOTE: The shelter is in Salvation Army headquarters directly across
from Parkland Hospital, not to be confused with the store/rehab center at Harry Hines and Inwood.

Do you know anyone in Texas as an evacuee from any of the three states Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama? If so, the Texas Department of Health and Human Services will give them 2 months of Food Stamps with no questions asked. All they need to show is a drivers license. This agency will also give you information and locations where they can receive FREE GAS.
Also, if you are housing anyone from one of these states you can call FEMA at (800) 621-3362 file a claim and receive assistance for your help. This is valid information directly from TDHHS.

below is the site to find a location near you
<http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/> http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/

Refugees who are here because of Hurricane Katrina can file for their
unemployment here in Texas and apply for emergency food stamps at DHS.
Here are the numbers to call:
Texas unemployment: 214-252-1200
Food stamps: 1-800-448-3927
Red Cross: 214-678-4800

5. OH NO! This one is BOGUS
I'm going to leave it so you'll know what to look for:

Bogus food stamps/gasoline e-mail

An e-mail is being circulated that indicates that food stamps and free gasoline for Hurricane Katrina evacuees are available from or through the "Texas Department of Health and Human Services."

The e-mail is bogus.

However, hurricane evacuees wanting accurate information about food
stamps availability may call the 2-1-1 information service or 1-888-312-4567.

Some versions of the e-mail include the Web address for the former
Texas Department of Health, now part of the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The food stamps program is administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

Neither agency is supplying free gasoline.

4. Update on Residence Inn
The Residence Inn has had a resounding response from the community. So much so that there is three times what can be put out or dealt with. Please post an update so that they are not any more swamped than they have been.

We need to tell folks to donate at another site in my opinion. I
worked there from 3pm to 1:30 am and it is overwhelming what has been brought in. All offices are stuffed and the rest had to be moved to the 6th floor of the building next door.

The Residence Inn is providing free lodging and meals for 100 people
for 2 months. Maybe they need food donations, I don't know. They could use bottled water for sure.

This is what is needed after being there and seeing what we could put out.

- Folks who show up and help to sort what is already there. Anytime
am, afternoon or pm. There is much work to do sorting.

- Garmet racks would be a blessing. There are none and we could use 5 - 10.

- Boxes, boxes and more boxes. Packing tape. Paper grocery / shopping bags are needed for shoppers.

- Please sort items if at all possible.

- There is a huge need for new womens underwear, there is none. Bras, panties, socks.

- Folks need work: some do nails, massage, housekeeping, that's all I know at this point, but income is needed and wanted.

- Phone cards, gift cards, gas cards always fit.

- 4 babies are due soon. We need two baby carriers, 4 cradles at a
minimum. A few more newborn clothes would be good too.

- I think that someone is bringing backpacks full of school supplies. A few more school supplies might not be a bad idea: scissors, rulers, paper, pens, glue, erasures, backpacks. Quite a few are teen agers and will be going to Pierce HS.

- New sleeping bags would be a big hit. Consider inflatable mattresses from Walmart, $25 each.

- Some cd players for the kids with headphones might be nice.

- Many are Spanish speaking for whatever that is worth knowing.

Right now there are plenty of purses, shoes, sheets, blankets, towels, books, dog food, cat food, formula, diapers, feminine hygiene supplies, kids underwear, women's and men's clothes, travel size toiletries,

My guess is that lots of household items right now might be more
trouble than can be handled right now. These folks are staying at the Residence Inn.

My guess is that there is so much stuff that it will be shared with
another facility.

HELP ME GET THE WORD OUT.

10. We took new stuff to Salvation Army on Harry Hines
Diapers, women's underwear, packs of domino's, food, baby wipes ect ... all bulk stuff we bought a Costco about an hour ago.

One of the volunteers there told us they were moving supplies to Texas Stadium and that it would be a distribution center for all the donated goods. Just FYI

12. update
Saturday September 3, 2005 2:30 PM

Dear Members:

I just got off of the phone with Angela at the Dallas Red Cross Center.
She asked me to please post this e-mail and make sure it gets
circulated
in North Texas.

The Red Cross is not training people at the Dallas Convention Center or
at Reunion Arena or any other refugee site.

The Red Cross is requesting cash donations at this point.

Anyone who wants to sign up as a volunteer in North Texas needs to go
to
this website: www.volunteernorthtexas.org
<http://www.volunteernorthtexas.org> 214-826-6767.

Sign up and then they will call you back.

Angela said that they want volunteers but right now they are
overwhelmed
and the more people who show up at Reunion or The Dallas Convention
Center the more chaos they have to deal with. She said the Red Cross
and other agencies will be needing volunteers for at least six months
so
it is OK to wait.

The Dallas Red Cross phone number is: 214-678-4800.

When I called the Dallas Convention Center, they referred me back to
the
Red Cross number.

PLEASE verify all your information before you go to any of these
places.

We all want to help but without coordination, it will be mass chaos.

Bless each and everyone of you who are reaching out to others at this
time of need. If you can't verify who you are receiving information
from, be sure and do a little research before you act.

Well, I forwarded a well intended peice of info from what was sent to
me
& I am sorry. (SEE RETRACTION, BELOW) What I have decided to do is
leave
the relay of info to the trained professionals.
If you go to http://www.dallasnews.com you will see the homepage for
the
Dallas Morning News. They have a 'Katrina' aftermath button on the
tool
bar with all the info & MORE that I have been sending. Most
organizations that are spearheading efforts are sending news memos
there
& DMN has a comprehensive section of websites, drop off points
volunteer
oportunities, etc, which I ASSUME have been verified by professional
reporters.

Below is a reminder regarding help for the RED CROSS, info that I got
my
self from professionals I spoke with at that agency... also is a
forward
from a friend who has been at Residence Inn, her info is first hand.
The
memo sent last night about the refugee intake at BIGTOWN is accurate as
of last night, I was there briefly & spoke with someone from city of
Mesquite. BUT...Check the retraction at the end of this digest. Please
use the DMN website for info on how to help.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
FROM ME, JILL P-
A VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER about cash donations & volunteer efforts:
TO help the Red Cross, the agency charged with managing the needs of
disaster victims. Call 214 678 4800 to donate. Call 214 670 4275 to
volunteer.

A word from my friend Dennis Persons in Washington DC who is a level 7
disaster specialist at the Red Cross.
He says events like 9-11 and 'Katrina' get a lot of press and donations
earmarked for specific victims of what the Red Cross calls "Designer
Disasters" ( The really famous ones)
Meanwhile, each day of the year, in this country & all over the world,
hundreds of thousands of people get burned out, flooded out, bombed out
&
starved out but have less press coverage and so less resourses
available
to them. The most helpful thing you can do is give the Red Cross a
donation that IS NOT EARMARKED. SO that this organization can do its
work, 24-7, 365 days a year, press coverage or not, for all various
disaster survivors who have had the rug pulled out from under them.

I spoke with a guy at the local Red Cross and he said that weeks &
months
after 'Katrina' has passed, these displaced people will still need
services and there will be very little press coverage. He asked that
volunteers leave names & numbers to be called on in the near future
when
the ground swell of press inspired volunteers has thinned out.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------
IN LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) FROM MY FRIEND MURIAH P:
The Residence Inn will close it's doors to gifting to refugees tomorrow
(
meaning today Sunday) at 5 but more donations and the largest number of
shoppers are expected.

Come if you can and assist with sorting or go the the Dallas Convention
Center and at a minimum help sort clothing there.

I saw a hundred cars under the bridge tonight where the homeless
usually
sleep. We are in tremendous need of support.

Hope you can find time to volunteer. If you are handicapped or have
limited physical strength, we need to get everyone registered a website
so that families can find each other. That is sit down job and is
crucial.

Also, just ministering to folks is not happening as much as is needed.

Come be a part, one way or the other.

CURRENT NEEDS:

Cases of water

Decent shoes, tennis shoes especially

Underwear (preferably new but used in the absence of new)

Can Openers

Gas, gift and phone cards

Feminine hygiene products

Diapers, baby wipes, formula, pedialite

Cash (will be handed to Residence Inn management and dispersed as
needed)

School supplies, backpacks - kids are enrolling in school

Inflatable mattresses

Sleeping bags (childs / adult)

Jobs, work

A gift of a listening ear

Someone to help them shop

Volunteers to come and sort donations

Brochures of Dart Rail and bus routes

Dallas City maps

BOXES, BOXES, BOXES

Please note that it is a zoo. Most donations were turned away at the
Residence Inn. Just tell them that these are specifically requested
items.

Another thing that would really help would be to create a handout that
would list numbers for various agencies, shelters, job sources.

This was in the Dallas Morning news web section on 'Katrina'
RETRACTION...
OOPS!

Dallas County Health and Human Services officials sought Friday to
dispel
rumors circulating through e-mail and radio shows indicating that the
agency is providing food stamps and free gasoline to Hurricane Katrina
evacuees.

"We don't know where it started or how this started," said Jacqueline
Bell, a spokeswoman for the agency. "The bottom line is: It's not
true."

Ms. Bell said evacuees who reach the Dallas area should go to Reunion
Arena to register, whether or not they need immediate housing.

She said some evacuees might be eligible for food stamps. Those who
want
to inquire about food stamp eligibility in Texas may call
1-888-312-4567.

The county health department is providing services to people who are
being treated for tuberculosis and HIV. The agency also stands ready to
assist people currently receiving WIC benefits and or housing vouchers.
For additional information about these services, people may call
214-819-6001.

evacuees. The NTFB distributes food to 400 agencies in 13 counties.
During the past three days, agencies in Dallas, Bonham, Hunt and
surrounding counties are calling seeking additional food product. Food
orders to the Food Bank from member agencies has increased by 50% since
Katrina hit.

In addition, the Food Bank is a staging area for other Texas Food Banks
helping with the relief effort, especially in Houston, Beaumont and San
Antonio.

As one of the 213 member food banks of America's Second Harvest - The
Nation's Food Bank Network, the NTFB is also assisting in providing
food
to those A2H food banks in the Gulf States. Six of them are inoperable
or damaged.

A full list of high demand food items is posted on www.ntxfoodbank.org
<file://www.ntxfoodbank.org>. We encourage the public to visit the
website continually as it is updated with the latest needs in terms of
food and assistance.

Today over 300 volunteers will be at the North Texas Food Bank, sorting
and boxing food which will be used for Katrina relief efforts. One
hundred percent of all funds donated to the NTFB for Katrina relief
will
be used for this disaster effort .

I thought I might expand on the good information that Amy posted about
the Salvation Army. I had the honor of being at a planning meeting of
Dallas area clergy on Friday, where the City staff told us where they
hoped the primary funnel-points would be for the forseable future.

Amy is absolutely correct that the city and Red Cross are channeling
all
volunteer requests through the volunteer center now. There ARE some
volunteers being trained by local churches, but that's mostly for
short-
term needs in the next few days.

Any gifts of goods (food, etc...) should be channeled through the
Salvation Army.

Cash gifts to the Dallas Red Cross and the North Texas Food Bank will
also be incredibly helpful. Every one dollar to the Food Bank buys the
equivalent of 11 dollars of food!

I have posted links to the Dallas Red Cross online site, as well as to
a
site where folks can give to the North Texas Food Bank directly.

You can find those links at our church's blog entry on Katrina:

<http://www.northaven.org/B641252324/C1588820517/E20050902160201/index.html>

One things we were told over the weekend, and one correction this blog:

There is NO need for additional clothes at this time. (In fact, a
church
member was turned away with several bags of clothes yesterday...)

We were told today that the "health kits" listed on our blog entry are
no
longer needed...as those initial needs have now been met.

This will be a long-term crisis, and it is possible that many of the
8000
evacuees in downtown shelters will never return to their homes.
Tomorrow
morning begins the work of attempting to find places for many of these
folks to live....long-term housing, not just short-term shelters.

If you know of a place that can provide long-term housing to an
evacuee,
I can pass that info along to the city. (we're talking six months or
more, probably....) There's no guarantee every offer can be used, and
there will need to be extensive screening done, but it may well be some
folks end up in unused garage apartments, etc...

Over 5000 amazing musicians have chosen to donate ALL
money from the
sale of their CD *directly* to the Red Cross disaster
relief fund.

You can hear and buy their CDs, here:
http://cdbaby.com/group/redcross

If you've been seeing the images of New Orleans after
Hurricane
Katrina and have thought about donating to help those
in need, please
consider buying some albums from that page.

Subject: Unity Church of Dallas Hurricane Relief Update

on Forest between Hillcrest and Preston

HURRICANE RELIEF
Updated 9-5-05

Here are ways that you can help immediately:

Parking Lot E at Reunion Arena has become a citizen-led effort to
sort donations and help evacuees find what they need. Because so
many Unity volunteers have been working there, some people consider
us in charge, and we want to rally to the cause. But Tuesday is a
back-to-work day for most people. If you can work as a volunteer
anytime between 8 am and 9 pm in the next few days, the relief site
can stay open. If you are willing to be an organizer, it means
making sure volunteers are at each station and things are generally
running smoothly. Wear your blue Unity Volunteer T-shirt if you have
one! Before you go, please check in with Volunteer Director Beverly
Pryor or Receptionist Laura Sutherland at the church, 972-233-7106.

Richard and Gwen Schiera will be accepting as many as 72 evacuees in
their loft building. Please bring cots, bedding, pillows, sleeping
bags or air mattresses to the church on Tuesday morning between 8:30
am and noon. Bring it to the back of the church to the double glass
doors that lead to the sanctuary. Contact the Schieras at 214-426-
5106.

Pets A group of people from Dallas are going to New Orleans the
weekend of Sept. 10-11 to take care of the animals there. Please
donate any pet dishes, leashes, toys, beds, carriers, etc. for them
to take. For more information, contact Myra Gonzales 972-293-8547.

Give money to the American Red Cross. Donations will be accepted in
the hallway again on Sunday, Sept. 11. (Make checks payable to UCD.)
Or click on the link from UCD's homepage to the Red Cross website.

Donations -- diapers, toys, new underwear, toiletries. Bring to the
church.
