Former Gov. Bill Clements warns TX Republicans not to have a showdown
Edited on Thu May-19-05 02:39 PM by Bouncy Ball
He warns them NOT to allow a nasty primary between Perry and Hutchison and throws in a "by the way, I support Perry."

My conclusion is they've dusted off the old boy to try to intimidate KBH or keep the repukes in line or something. Which strikes me as rather pathetic.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/opinion/viewpoints/stories/051905dnediclements.bf2115d8.html

In 1978, the Democratic Party was in the majority and dominating the political landscape. Democrats held all statewide offices, except for the Senate seat of John Tower. They controlled both the House and Senate in the state Legislature. They occupied the vast majority of local offices.

Conventional wisdom informed us that this was the political reality for years, if not decades, to come.

Then a funny thing happened on the way to the polling place. Conventional wisdom was turned on its head.

Democrats engaged in a contentious primary for the gubernatorial nomination. John Hill battled incumbent Dolph Briscoe. The Democratic Party ended the primary divided and embittered, with the liberal and conservative wings fractured. It did not heal in time for November, and some would say that it has never healed. Many conservative Democrats started voting Republican in 1978 and eventually became Republicans.

The majority party that could not lose did exactly that in 1978 to an outsider, a successful drilling contractor who had no previous political experience. Me.

A) My God, he's old.

B) Here's hoping the current crop of repukes are too stupid to listen to him. Oh wait, they are.

You could cut the schadenfreude in here with a knife, couldn't you? The thought of the Repub primary fight gives me great joy.

already.

I want to write an LTTE to the Dallas Morning News. How does this sound:

Dear Editor,

So the Texas Republicans have dusted off ol' Bill Clements to try to warn Hutchison away from a fight with Perry, huh? Well, he's right when he says one thing: us Democrats would enjoy a nasty Republican primary fight. But Gov. Clements shouldn't worry too much--fratricide isn't always fatal. His man Perry may just make it out alive. I'm off to buy some popcorn.

What do you think? Should I send it? Changes?

I'm convinced there's a die-hard bush/repuke HATER on the letters staff, because they LOVE shit like that.

2. Clements will always
be remembered for his role in the SMU football scandal back when the Mustangs were a pro team almost as good as the Cowboys. Heck, they were better than the Cowboys of recent seasons.

"There wasn't a Bible present" was his famous one-liner during the recruiting scandal which caused the NCAA to impose the "death penalty" on SMU football. See No. 4 on the "list of lies" below.

3. HE was the reason???
HE WAS??

My goodness, that's rich. While I was at A&M, SMU was still on that really hard-core probation and they came off of it I think in my junior or senior year and their first game, I believe, was against A&M.

Now I don't know how the Aggies are playing nowdays but this was back when they were still in the SWC (is that still around?) and they were the big bad boys on the block with UT and, in a minor role, Tech.

There were jokes about A&M playing its third string team against SMU so as not to cause to many injuries or run up the score too much. Well, that wasn't a joke, they really did do that.

The score was some crazy lopsided thing. I think they actually allowed SMU to make three points or something. MOST boring game I ever attended. People left at halftime and Aggies NEVER do that.

Anywho, I didn't know he was behind that. Asshat.

7. I heard that the GOP is trying to buy KBH off
I have heard that the GOP is offering KBH a senate leadership slot or an ambassadorship. The gop is really afraid of a fight between Perry and KBH.

BTW, Perry has been a weak governor and may be vulnerable.

8. Yep, I heard that too.
By God, I hope they don't. I hope KBH decides to have a nasty fight with Perry and both sides reveal all kinds of nasty dirty shit about the other and they just get down in that mud and tear each other a NEW ass.

Wouldn't that be sweet?

11. Looks to me like KBH isn't taking his calls
so "I've got a big checkbook" Clements has resorted to writing letters in the newspapers.

14. But can they keep One Tough Grandma
out of the race too? :o

You know, the republicans will still probably take the race, but it certainly is shaping up to be a fun one at least.

15. I will support
State Comptroller Carol Keyton-Strayhorn if she runs. Yeah, she's a Repub, but I think she's just about as close as you can get to being a Dem in wolf's clothing. My wife, a die-hard liberal Dem (and a newly minted teacher), has written several letters to Texas public officials regarding school financing. The only one who answered was Strayhorn, with a letter that was typed and had several hand-written notes added to it. Bottom line, in a state dominated by Repubs, it helps the ol' career to be a Repub. But she rides the middle ground quite a bit, criticizing the right as much as the left (actually, probably a little more).
