Gay marriage ban hits stumbling block in Senate
Backers promise to prevail

A proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage met resistance Monday at the Capitol when a Democratic senator put a 48-hour hold on debating the ban and hinted that he might launch a filibuster to kill it.

But proponents predicted voters will still field the issue this fall. Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, applied a parliamentary "tag" delaying a Senate hearing on House Joint Resolution 6 for 48 hours. The result: A committee hearing on the proposal cannot take place until later this week.

An aide said Ellis' act drew a threatening telephone call from someone identifying himself as representing the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas.

Late Monday, Department of Public Safety officials were unable to confirm that the threat came from the white supremacist group.

I wrote my senator a nastygram the other day about this, but it certainly wasn't a threat! I can't believe they are wasting their time on this nonsense.
