These days conservatives are touting themselves as proponents of a "culture of life". I find that difficult to understand. The "culture of life" does not engage in an unjust war against the Pope's admonition, or execute minors and the mentally retarded in spite of pleas for mercy from the Pope. A culture of life does not fail to provide body armor to its troops, or fail to keep track of civilian war casualties in an attempt to hide their numbers. A culture of life does not sponsor torture. A culture of life does not allow a law to be signed which permits hospitals to terminate life support for those who cannot pay. A culture of life protects the weak, the sick and the unfortunate among us by ensuring affordable healthcare for all, by supporting fair laws to pursue recourse when wrongfully injured, by protecting (not cutting) Medicare and Medicaid, and by allowing families to declare bankruptcy when medical bills become overwhelming. Conservatives do not support a culture of life, and Americans are not fooled.
