NRA changes endorsement in House race
RAPID CITY, S.D. - The National Rifle Association has endorsed Rep. Stephanie Herseth, D-S.D., after the gun-rights group had endorsed her Republican challenger, Larry Diedrich, in a June 1 special election.

Herseth defeated Diedrich in the special election by about 3,000 votes. The two face each other again in the Nov. 2 general election.

The endorsement switch is due to a single vote that Herseth cast Sept. 29 to lift a ban on most guns in the city of Washington, D.C.

That measure passed the House on a 250-171 vote, with 52 Democrats voting to lift the gun ban.

1. NRA support
I can't really say that I'm completely thrilled about this. I'm not comfortable with her vote to allow more guns in the city of Washington.

On the other hand, it certainly puts the lie to the Republican's effort to try to paint her as against gun ownership, and to paint her as invariably and predictably voting the Democratic party line.

Furthermore, I certainly still support her against Diedrich, and I never did expect to agree with her on everything--after all, she thinks for herself!

And overall, if it helps her to win, and if it helps the Democrats contest (and possibly win a majority in the House), and if it's one more tiny thing pointing at what liars the Republicans are in their politics and campaigning in general, and if a few more people actually start to notice, then over all I guess I'm just happy about it after all.

2. NRA endorsement
Then again, it occurs to me that perhaps the real reason for the NRA endorsement is because they foresee her as winning, and they just want to be on the winning side.

I guess that makes me feel ambivalent about it all over again.

3. The NRA will usually endorse the incumbent if
she has a good voting record on gun control.

4. Meh..
I often think that I'm not a huge Herseth fan--then I remember that it is SOUTH DACONSERVATIVEKOTA and I really don't care if she does things that I personally don't agree with. Because, I mean hell, it is SD and she is better than any other rep that would/could get elected.

*shrug*
