USD student and GOP activist regrets calling Herseth a witch

A University of South Dakota student says he regrets calling U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth a witch in an effort to promote a rally for her congressional opponent.

Andrew Brown, chairman of the USD Republicans, sent an e-mail to students inviting them to a Thursday rally at the campus student center, telling recipients to "Help Larry defeat 'Washington Witch' Stephanie Herseth by showing your support."

Brown signed his name to the message and later made telephone calls to explain.

Wow, what has Herseth done to deserve this label? Run over and kill a Vietnam vet with her cadillac???

1. Stephanie Herseth
Heavens no--rather she beat Larry Diedrich in the special election, and is (albeit slightly) favored to beat him again.

(And I'll certainly be working to try to make it happen again!)

2. Stephanie will win the next 10 races!
She's an incumbent, and doing a VERY good job, too! That's why Diedrich lost twice!

Here's how we can paint South Dakota Ultra-Blue!

After the election, I decided to change things. I decided we needed to have our own elections-- 6 times a year!

Check out UDO!

...and attention into South Dakota that they did in 2002 or 2004 in future elections. Thune's candidacies were pissing contests between Bush and Daschle. With Daschle no longer the majority leader, Bush moves on to other things.

(I lived in South Dakota for 2 1/2 years {Rapid City}, so I consider it a second home; that's why I'm taking the interest.)

What about Daschle for governor? He's the most high-profile unemployed Democrat in the state. Is Rounds pretty popular, right now? I remember he rode to victory by being the third alternative between two mudslinging front-runners and got a lot of free press from that. Daschle almost won re-election, so I would think he'd have a shot at the governor's seat.

Hell, losing in 2004 could end up being a positive for him.

4. Would that work?
From what I see, the Dakotas tend to vote Republican on most local races and Democratic on national races (mostly for the funds from DC). Or if he does run, how long should he wait? There is still lots of mud laying around from the Thune Campaign. The local GOP in SD would not have to do much to reignight their old talking points.

5. Thune only waited two years....
...after losing to Johnson before he jumped right to Daschle, and that was almost as nasty a race as the Thune/Daschle race. Both races were incredibly close, but really, who else could the Democrats run who'd have a better shot at the governorship?

6. Daschle race for governor?
I don't know who the Democrats could run with a reasonable chance against Rounds. I don't know if Daschle would want to run for governor.

I do know that Rounds is indeed popular right now, including, interestingly, here in Indian country where most Republicans are far from popular. To his credit, as Republicans go, Rounds has been relatively open handed and fair, even though I disagree with many of his positions I can't really say that he has used dirty politics to push his programs through, and on some issues he has even sided with the Democratic minority in the state legislature.
