House candidates seek funding
By Joe Kafka, Associated Press Writer

PIERRE — Candidates in South Dakota's U.S. House race are looking for cash to refill campaign coffers after an $8 million special election that set a record for a House campaign in the state.

The two candidates in the June 1 contest for the congressional seat left vacant after Bill Janklow's manslaughter conviction poured nearly $4 million into the campaign, leaving them with little dough for a Nov. 2 general election rematch for the next two-year term.

The winner of Janklow's unexpired term, Democratic Rep. Stephanie Herseth, had $186,722 in remaining cash on June 21, according to a new report filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Her opponent, Republican Larry Diedrich, had only $60,324 in the bank on the same date.
