Bush’s woes take toll on S.C. Republicans’ morale

South Carolina is still “Bush Country,” but there are signs cracks are beginning to form in what once was a solid front.

A string of political setbacks — the indictment of a White House staffer, growing opposition to the Iraq war, Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath and Harriet Miers’ bungled Supreme Court nomination — have exacted a personal toll on President Bush.

“Morale is low right now,” says state Republican Party chairman Katon Dawson. “We still trust the president. We’re supporting him in South Carolina.”

“Right now, we’re going through some rocky times,” says Columbia-based Republican consultant Tony Denny. “But we’ll get that turned around.”

2. You two shouldn't give up! Could be we'll see a bumper crop in 2006.
Here's a photo I just found in google of the Republican convention in August, 1956.

Here's one from 2004....

If Republicans take time to reflect on what's happening to their party, there just MAY be more suicides in obits than normal!

3. It's a lot easier to talk shit about bu$h these days.
Not too many will get all huffy when you lay out the laundry list of idiocy, perfidy, greed and total incompetence.

A serious party guy(delegate to conventions etc) who I was gently berating admitted that his party was in the thrall of religious whackos. A pretty decent guy, HS teacher, nature enthusiast, makes you wonder.

Three years ago I caught all kinds of hell when sounding off from my bully pulpit behind the counter. Probably ran off a few customers but fuck them. Nowadays all I get is agreement.
