In 2002, after about two years of investigation, federal officials socked a Connecticut utility with a $288,000 fine because power plant operators could not find two highly radioactive fuel rods that had been used there.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it’s likely the fuel rods from Connecticut’s Millstone power plant mistakenly ended up in a 1988 shipment of low-level nuclear waste to the dump in Barnwell County or to a similar disposal site in Washington state.

An NRC report, issued last week, said the waste from Connecticut should be left in Barnwell County. Trying to dig up the material would pose a “grave danger,” the report said. But the report said the nuclear material, if left alone, would have little impact on groundwater because it doesn’t move quickly.
