1. Phish, you've beaten me to the punch! :)
Here's the story in the Harrisburg Patriot-News:

Deal will keep Penguins in Pittsburgh, Rendell says
Posted by Sharon Smith/The Patriot-News March 13, 2007 11:25AM

Gov. Ed Rendell says an agreement has been reached that will keep the Penguins hockey team in Pittsburgh for the next 30 years.

The deal includes financing that depends on gambling revenues. "Without expanded gaming, the Penguins would be gone," said Rendell, who spoke this morning at the third annual Pennsylvania Gaming Congress at Whitaker Center in Harrisburg.

"If you don't like gaming, understand we would have lost an important institution," Rendell said. The NHL Penguins have wanted a new arena for years, and the team had been considering a move that would have taken it out of the state.

Although Rendell gave few details, he said the deal includes $15.5 million in bonds to be repaid by slot-machine revenues; $7.5 million committed by Don Barden, the head of Majestic Star, which is building a slot-machine parlor in Pittsburgh; and $7.5 million in state economic development funds, which also rely on gambling money. Rendell is headed to Pittsburgh to make a formal announcement this afternoon.

2. And keep in mind
That $7.5 million from Barden is yearly, as outlined in the plan B proposals. I particularly like that the Pens will have to contribute to this (I hate the deals where the team doesn't contribute anything).

3. I'm happy the Pens are contributing to this, too - as well they should!
It's absolutely thrilling that the new arena is coming in: Revenue for the city, an opportunity to present top-drawer entertainment in a beautiful venue that everyone can take pride in, and a stunning showcase for the team to play in. The fans deserve all the credit for their persistence and loyalty.

IMHO, Mario Lemieux has been a real jerk throughout this entire process. The City of Pittsburgh has been in receivership the past few years, yet he seems to have been oblivious to this. Lemieux's attitude has been, "Give me my sports area, or I'm taking my toys and going home." Ass!

The fact that he contributed to Santorum's campaign back in '99 doesn't provoke any goodwill from me, either.

4. I don't know Penndems
Edited on Thu Mar-15-07 05:59 PM by Rusty MacHenry
Okay i'm going to say something that your not gonna like but I have to say it cause it's the truth. You should all thank Lemieux and his ownership group for all the poistering for saving this team cause Swindell and all the other local politicos did nothing to help us in the process. It was Lemieux, the league and the great pens fans that took an active role and fought long and hard to force Rendell and co. to make a deal. Fast Eddie has been obstructing this whole thing from the beginning from acting like a little baby during the negociations from not letting the penguins see the intrest rates for the arena.

Penndems I am shocked and outraged by your comments, "Give me my sports area, or I'm taking my toys and going home." Ass!

Yeah if he wasn't playing politics and poisturing with KC the politicans wouldn't of broke down and gave him a deal. Sometimes your going to have to say questionable things to get stuff done. Swindell did nothing in this, it was Lemieux, the NHL and fans like me that put the pressure on Rendell, Danny O and baby mayor Luke to get a deal done.

Not to be rude or anything Penndems, but when you say something you should research your facts before saying it. And as for contributing to Slick Rick in 1999, who cares? Mario has the right to donate money to whatever politican he want to. There isn't a rule where when donating money to political campaigns that's your forced to contribute only to Democrats.

P.S Although my comments are kinda mean, I hope there are no hard feelings with anyone here, I still hope we can all be good friends and continue debating, no offense. And if I offended anyone by my comments well, i'm sorry not trying to be rude.

5. Welcome to DU, Rusty MacHenry!

:hi:

There is no offense taken by your comments. We DUers love a spirited discussion, as long as it's done with intelligence, facts and consideration for others' viewpoints. I look forward to reading and responding to more of your observations.

Off-topic: Please pardon me if I'm just a little bit giddy here, but Virginia Commonwealth University just beat Duke by a whisker (79-77), knocking them out of the NCAA playoffs. Woohoo! :woohoo:

On the outset, congratulations on the new arena. This has been a long time coming and you - the fans - made it happen. What a wonderful revenue generator this will be for Pittsburgh. The pride is back! ;)

First (and I'll keep this short, because all the PA DUers already know this; don't want to bore anyone): I worked on Ed Rendell's first gubernatorial campaign in the Harrisburg office back in '02, so I know the man fairly well, and suspect he did his damnedest to work out a deal that was satisfactory to all parties concerned.

Time and time again, and reading the "Letters to the Editor" in the Pittsburgh papers, Yinzers have opined that Ed Rendell is a crook. They are entitled to their opinions, but I know differently. The man is busting his ass traveling around Pennsylvania handing out checks, talking to people, addressing hundreds of civic groups and associations outside the state, attending trade shows where he can personally market PA, and getting involved in the state tourism industry - all in an effort to get vacationers and businesses to come and spend money. With the possible exception of the late Milton Shapp, IMHO no other Pennsylvania Governor has made the efforts Ed Rendell has to improve that state. Is he perfect? No, but the man has a vision and, come hell or high water, he's gonna drag Pennsylvania into the twenty-first century kicking and screaming - and you'll be the better for it by the time he leaves office.

Full disclosure moment: I received a wonderful letter from The Guv back in August 2006. Normally when I send a candidate a contribution, s/he sends me a nice form letter with a hand-written signature and a "Thank you!" notation. This letter came straight from the Governor's Office, addressed me by my first name, "thanks for helping us to move Pennsylvania forward", etc. After the closing, he wrote in his own hand, "(my first name), thanks for being my out-of-state volunteer!" Four years have passed, I've moved back to my home state of Virginia, and he still remembered me. Is it any wonder the man keeps getting reelected?

Mayor Ravenstahl is running for a full four-year mayoral term, and County Executive Onorato is considering a run for Governor in 2010, so yes - there are political implications here. They would be extremely foolish not to bring politics into the picture!

Secondly, I respectfully stand by my comment regarding Mr. Lemieux. He walked out of negotiations twice - not a very mature nor businesslike deed on Mario's part. If he had been truly concerned with keeping the Pens in Pittsburgh, Mr. Lemieux would've stayed at that table, night and day, hammering out a deal. He could sit down and make time to meet with Isle of Capri investors and work out an agreement with them even before the PGCB awarded the first licenses, but he didn't have the patience to convene with state and local officials in long-term discussions?

To reiterate an earlier point, something else that miffed me was Mr. Lemieux's obstinate insistence on the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania providing him with a sports/entertainment venue. Pittsburgh has been in receivership for the past few years. Restoring that city to full solvency, keeping it afloat on a day-to-day basis and securing financing for mass transit and the highway infrastructure, have been Priority One. Negotiating with the team for a new edifice had to go on the back burner. If Mario didn't take that into consideration, then yes, I do believe he was being a jackass - or a "jagoff", in Pittsburgh parlance.

Yes, Mario does have the right to contribute to whichever candidate he chooses with his own money. Unfortunately, he wrote a check to Rick Santorum's campaign, a man who was despised not only statewide, but nationally. Hope he gave to Bob Casey this time around!

Well, I've gotten long-winded and I apologize for that. The bottom line is that an agreement was finalized to bring Pittsburgh a beautiful new venue it can be proud of, and that will generate much-needed proceeds to the city. Between that and the new Majestic Star casino, "da Burgh" has a bright future, and something that just might give young adults another reason to stay! :)

6. Yes all that matters
Is that the Pens are staying in Pittsburgh, developments around the Hill will be made and the arena will bne built with NO TAX MONEY, who couldn't be happy about that. Yes I don't like the Governor for multiple reasons but i am somewhat grateful to have him as our Governor cause of his gambling, without the gambling plan the Pens would be gone, there is no question about so I am grateful for that. And as for Lemieux, yes he has done alot for this team Penndems but you know it and I know it the guy is not saint in this whole thing.

7. Thank you - I completely forgot about Hill District redevelopment
What a tremendous incentive this is for them! :)

Hubby and I made two trips to The Steel City while we were living in Pennsylvania. We can't wait to come back soon, and see construction under way for the new casino and arena.

I love Pittsburgh and The Keystone State, and am so happy for you! :loveya:

8. Thank You
Me and Pens fans around the area are grateful that they are. The pens are part of Pittsburgh's rich sport tradition just as much as the stillers and bucco's are and if they did move to Kansas City it would be a huge blow to the city and the NHL. It would be a blow to the city cause the penguins generate around $120-$130 millio in revenue a season(from the team directly and the local business around the mellon arena)I remember the PG did a piece on the business around the arena that were hurt due to the NHL lockout that shut out the 04-05 season, everyone from the souper bowl to the steelhead grill were feeling the lockout.

It would be a BIG blow to the league cause since the 05-06 season the pens have emerged at the top in TV ratings and merchandise sales. Moving to KC would be a HUGE gamble because KC is a unproven hockey market and it's mostly a college b-ball town and NASCAR.

9. Kansas City's loss is Pittsburgh's gain
The revenue generated by Pens fans would've greatly exceeded that in KC, no doubt.

Mr. Lemieux made the right decision by staying in Pittsburgh. :D

10. i'm curious...
as to your reasons for not liking the Governor. As someone who has spent roughly two years working for him in some capacity, I'm curious...

It's been my experience that a lot of the things people point out when asked aren't exactly based on the complete facts.
