Hoeffel works Boston for boost in Senate bid

BOSTON - U.S. Rep. Joseph M. Hoeffel spoke yesterday in a half-full
convention hall, at the less-than-prime-time slot of 4:43 p.m.
The Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania did
what he could to make an impression. He walked confidently onto the
stage of the Democratic National Convention, smiled wide, and
delivered a three-minute speech about his upbringing and hopes for
America's future.
The effort earned enthusiastic cheers - from his home-state
delegation, at least. Others clapped politely.
But the reception inside the FleetCenter did not matter nearly as
much as the warm one that Hoeffel has been seeking outside the hall
