Ban The Bag in Portland!
http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Ban-the-Bag-A-campaign-to-end-single-use-plastic-bags-in-Portland/117411578288?v=info&ref=ts

Just a couple of hours ago, I met some of the people in the Surfriders based organization who are actively campaigning to ban single-use plastic bags citywide. Like many of you, I find these bags extremely annoying! So it was pretty cool to have a beer with some nice, friendly, people who despise these tacky-looking bags as much as I do!! ...no, wait!

Ban-The-Bag people have actually seen the swirling-plastic-trash-islands in the Pacific Ocean with their own eyes, so they have a first hand account of the destruction these disposable plastic bags cause our environment, and, they probably loathe the obnoxious bags even more than I do, if that is possible.

In any case, Ban The Bag is going to be having weekly meetings inner SE Portland, Tuesday nights at 6 pm. June through early July. Pretty casual, sociable. Highly Recommended!

DUers can PM me if you are interested.

1. I'd like to see this go statewide.
I'm in Central Oregon and fully support the Ban the Bag project. Way to go! You know, I'm sure, that the Make the Bag folks are doing all they can to undermine your efforts. I recall a similar scenario when the Bottle Bill was enacted back in the day. Anyway, best wishes in this worthy pursuit!

2. Mayor Adams Proposes
http://theportlander.com/2010/07/17/mayor-adams-proposes-plastic-bag-ban/

I find flaws in the proposal, people do re-use the plastic bag. I think compostable plastic bags should be available, but for less than the proposed 5 cents.
