Tent city in Portland?
I saw this thread on the tent city in Ontario, California, and I was reminded of the tent city that existed in Portland for a while. I think it was still around when I left in 2003.

Does anyone know what happened to it?

1. Still exists
but it moved from downtown to the Sunderland neighborhood of north Portland, where it currently resides in a vacant lot the city once used for recycling leaves and yard debris.

I almost wish that it was still in downtown, within the view of thousands of conspicuously consuming Portlanders, a harbinger of the hard times that face us all unless we can get this country back on track.

3. The name is Dignity Village, it's alive and well...
thought they've changed quite a bit the last few years. Dignity Village is now a semi-permanent, semi-official encampment. They lease their land and utilities from the city, on unused landfill, between the airport and the golf courses in NE Portland.

Dignity Village website:

I think it's entirely possible that their semi-nomadic, resource-effecient lifestyle is the wave of the future.
