Bush to announce development on Columbia dredging during visit
The Columbian

President Bush will make a "major announcement" on Friday about a long-sought proposal to deepen the Columbia River for bigger modern ships, according to dredging supporters.

The $150.5 million project, initially proposed in 1988, would deepen the river's shipping channel by 3 feet between Portland-Vancouver and the mouth of the river at Astoria, Ore. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers needs $15 million to begin the planned two-year project next summer. ..

.. Environmental groups have challenged the proposal as an economic boondoggle that will further degrade imperiled salmon runs. Portland-based Northwest Environmental Advocates has filed a lawsuit to block the project. ..

1. Yikes! Radioactive Toxic Waste get stirred up!
The river is tidal (goes both ways) to Portland/Vancouver. Don't eat the fish for a few years. It would be nice is they could just use a vacume cleaner.
