YEAR END Portland DU MEETUP !
It has been brought to my attention (by my wandering eyes) that a DUer from afar will be here through January 4th and wishes to enjoy one of our patented Portland DU Meetup AKA Neocon Throwdowns ! ...

So .. I would propose we meet on Saturday, December 30th, instead of what would be the first saturday in January, Jan 6th ... (Sunday, December 31st, New Years Eve is a possibility as well ...)

Im not sure, but I have a feeling this will work BETTER for most people, due to being between xmas and New Years Day, and that it may be easier to find time to fit it in ....

So consider this a twofold thread:

1) Shall we meet on The last weekend of the year (Saturday or Sunday - Dec 30-31, 2006), or shall we meet on Saturday, January 6, 2007 (that seems so far away ...)

and:

2) We have barely scratched the surface of possible meetup sites - SO many places we havent been to yet, OR, shall we consider our old standby, Lucky Lab/Hawthorne, once more ? .... Or ???????

Cast yer votes HERE ! ....

1. Instead of ? or in addition to?
I would not be adverse to meeting up more than once in 2 weeks. Not that I like you guys or anything... I only show up for the brews. and the food.

Perhaps we should inquire MaryBear's general location, and set up the meeting for something close and easy for her to get to. (and home from. :D )

2. in addition to
Either or both dates work for me. I agree with VLR, let's see where MaryBear is & choose an appropriate venue.

5. I'll come with friends, unless
someone wants to pick me up. I'm in Hillsboro, up on Bald Peak Road. My friends are long time Democrats, non-DU'ers (to date). I'll PM my cell phone number to the person who PM'd me. I vote for the 30th.

4. AND why aren't you coming?
Shouldn't we, once and for all, meet the incredible sandnsea ? .... You are in Florence, right ? ... May be a great opportunity for you to come to Portland and say HEY ....

7. Why not a meetup in Florence?
Save sandnsea the roundtrip. The coast is awesome in winter!

13. I love Florence ...
Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 02:23 PM by Trajan
And would love to go there .... but it would impact the ability of many Portland area DUers to participate if Florence were selected this weekend ... But Idont see any reason why would couldnt reach out to the coast now and again in preplanned meetup ventures in the future ...

Hell .. I would go NOW if that were the consensus .... Anyone ?

Many of us use public transportation here in Portland, but I'm sure something could be arranged, given decent notice, to make a trip to the coast ....

16. Cripes, I still might not show up
I am really really really NOT a social person, a bunch of people I've never met - I'm having a hard time breathing just thinking about it.

25. We are willing to go to Florence
if that is the choice. At the least, sandnsea, DU'ers are always interesting, and most are likeable, good to hang with, in my experience Take a deep breath and meet them/us. You can always leave in the event you do not like the group. Uh... no pressure though.

6. Newly minted Portlander +1 here...
We would love to have the chance to meet fellow DUers here in our new home of choice and refuge-from-the-"red"-"red"-desert.

Let us know when and where and we'll grab our trusty AAA map and a google-map and we'll introduce our travel and moving-weary selves to our fellow DUers.

It'd be a great way to either end the old year or start the new.

We look forward to meeting you.

:hi:

20. Hey, Trajan. My home desert is Nevada. Recently, though,
I lived a little over a year in the Arizona desert - northish of Phoenix. I am truly a "born desert rat." I'm so glad to shed that skin and grow some gills and webbed feet!

22. Being so old .. I have travelled all of them ...
And being a NYC boy, I was never in my element in the desert heat ....

BUT: DAMN Joshua Tree was amazing .... as was Death Valley (PRIME visiting time right now while its cool) .... I have a timeshare in Palm Springs .. hardly a raw desert, but hotter n' hell, to be sure ...

Look forward to meeting you and Mary ...

8. We are closer to Newberg
even though the address is Hillsboro. Weird.

My friends want to come and meet you all so I won't need a ride.

Looking forward to getting together!

10. Someone mentioned Helivita Tavern in Hillsboro a while back...
I'm partial to the Manilla off 99.

The Manilla isn't our regular type of microbrewery, just the local Tavern. :)

I know nothing about the Helivita

Ask you friend if there's anyplace she recommends. Covered outside seating and access to Trimet is all we ask. oh yea... lots of good local microbrews. :)

15. Helvetia Tavern is north of 26, north of Hillsboro Stadium ...
She must be in southern Hillsboro if she is near Newberg ....

I know nothing of Newberg, other than driving through one day and gasping 'wow' at how gorgeous the pastoral landscape ....

I would gladly meet there, or in Portland, or in .....

Helvetia has an outdoor section, but Im not sure if its covered during rain, and they do NOT take plastic, so cash or check (yeah right) would be required ....

23. I am thinking Helvetia is OUT ...
Why ? .... The Bus Stop thingy is key, and I have read some bad reports on Citysearch reviews for Helvetia ....

Since I started this, maybe I better toss a few choices out there and see what sticks ....

What is the weather going to be like Saturday ? ... I havent checked ...
