I just watched the OPB program on Sam Hill
the man who built the Gorge Hwy and the Peace Arch...

Hill favored building with concrete. He used it to build a full-scale replica of England's neolithic Stonehenge (located 4 miles east of the Museum); the Peace Arch (located on the border with Canada at Blaine, Washington); his Capitol Hill residence in Seattle; and the Museum itself.

The objective of many of Hill's early projects, such as Stonehenge and the Peace Arch, was to offer opportunities to experience a sense of place by incorporating interactive concepts; his plans for the historic Columbia River Gorge Highway emphasized how the design of the road would engage the traveler in contemplating the natural setting.

Now I realize one reason I see so much of the beauty of Oregon is because of this man. Driving up through the Gorge in a U-haul from Colorado, I fell in love. That man knew how to build a road. :)
