Response from Blumenauer RE: my impeach demand
Two days ago I wrote my rep, Earl Blumenauer, demanding that he support articles of impeachment against *. I got a response today. One the one hand, I'm totally impressed that I got a response so quickly, on the other hand - I really don't like what he has to say. What do you all think?

++++++++

Dear Mrs. XXXXXX:

Thank you for contacting me about President Bush's ill-advised actions in Iraq and the possibility of holding impeachment hearings. I think that having Congress work together in a cooperative fashion while proceeding with an impeachment of President Bush are mutually exclusive.

After watching Congress and the country be torn apart over the
impeachment process against President Clinton, there is little desire in Congress to have the nation undergo another divisive and painful political spectacle.

I find that the American public is much more focused and united on
issues of improving security, investing in education, and protecting the environment than is reflected by the rhetoric coming out of Congress. That is why I continue to work both to advance constructive items (such as the House-passed bipartisan reform of the federal flood insurance program, which I co-authored) while speaking out against things that I feel are ill-advised, like the unilateral preemptive attack against Iraq.

I do appreciate your taking the time to share your opinion with me.

Sincerely,

Earl Blumenauer
Member of Congress

1. That's pretty gutless.
I can hardly wait to get my response from Greg Walden, Oregon's token Bushbot. I would say that 2006 house cleaning should not be restricted to Republicans.

2. Excuse #3
You should respond that you do not believe it an honest response, nor to you believe he believes it to be an honest response. Then say you do not have to send another form letter thanking me for sharing this opinion/fact with you.

3. This really offends me and frightens me.
How many other Democrats in congress are afraid of exercising the constitutional remedy to an out of control president because of how disruptive it was when it was abused by the Republicans? This idiot makes it sound like everyone in congress is playing nice and that our elected Democrats have not been marginalized by a ruthless majority. Everyone needs to write their representative and both of their senators and determine just how gutless our representation in congress really is.

4. Looks like a standard CYA tactic
As we all know by now, introducing articles of impeachment is practically impossible with Tom Delay setting the house schedule. Shit, the congressional Dems are lucky to get copies of the legislation the republican caucus cooks up in their backroom deals prior to floor votes. Impeachment is currently a non-starter.

So even if Rep. Blumenauer were to go out on a limb demanding an impeachment of the shrub, it would go nowhere legislatively speaking. What good is it to say, "Hell yeah I'm gonna impeach that SOB" when he can't do anything about it? If the Dems win back the house in 2006, then suddenly things look quite a bit different, and you should re-send your letter then.

5. Oh... I would respond.
And this is what I would say.....

Recently you responding to my call for Impeachment fo the President with the reminder of the Clinton Impeachment Hearings were divisive and painful political spectacle.

Your correct, it was a political spectacle and that is why the Nation was so divided over the matter. The Presdient was being Impeached over a PRIVATE matter that had nothing to do with the running of our country. The local and National news media became Tabloid news.
People seen what was going on and were raged.

Now, the are raged for a different reason. Unlike President Clinton, the claims against President Bush are about his job as President.

This administration totaly understands your reasoning. And because of it, they have a blank check to do as they please.

After hearing about the damage lack of response makes, becaus SOMEONE and many others did not do their elected job. Shouldn't you be reviewing exactly what your elected job includes? Our Fore Fathers set up 3 branches of Government for a reason. Wither you like this part of your job or not, it IS part of your job. Your lack of action in this matter is no different then this Administrations lack of Action.
