Why I'm voting NO on the gas tax.
It seems a little counter-intuative to me, a liberal democrat, to be voting AGAINST a tax to fund the repair of roads and bridges, but it's not without rational thought. Bush passed his tax cut to benefit the richest among us. Now, all of the sudden there's not enough money to fund city infrastructures, so they come looking to us, the poor and middle class to realise the funds, in essence, indirectly asking us to fund the tax cut for the rich. Well, I'm voting no.

However you decide to vote, please make sure you get out and do so.

1. I gotta vote for it, evem though I agree with your point. I really don't
understand why the state legislators are trying to temporarily cut the gas tax at the same time we're voting to raise it. Why do they have this "rainy day fund" to dip into now to make up the difference, when our roads have been so bad for so long? Anyway, these roads have got to get fixed by somebody. I gotta think about those levees in NO, too. These roads are only getting worse, and it's gonna cost more later ifwe don't act now. Also, I've been through more tires, shocks, and alignments in 10 years here than I did in 20 years in California. You can pay up front or not, but you're gonna pay. Also, people are gonna get killed.
Back to where the money comes and goes, though. Here in Lawton, there are some roads that seem to be in fine shape, but they get federal matching funds for widening, so they get worked on. Meanwhile other streets in terrible shape just sit.
Still. like i said, I gotta vote for it. You know almost no-one else will.

I also have to vote against it
It is an easy fix that passes costs along to the gas-buying public without requiring any accountability from our legislators for their past failures. Our highways and bridges should be in much better shape but their maintenance has not been a legislative priority. I also have a real objection to passing a tax that will provide a fundamental service (maintenance of safe roads and bridges) when that tax will disproportionately impact low income wage earners, the unemployed, the elderly, etc.
