Racial discrimination in home sales is not unusual in the Toledo-area real estate market, according to a Perrysburg Realtor who alerted authorities to alleged discrimination by Otsego High School's boys basketball coach and his wife.
The Ohio Civil Rights Commission recently filed a complaint against Keith Limes and his wife, Tracy, in Wood County Common Pleas Court.
Darlene Sweeney Newbern, director of the commission's regional office in Toledo, said it found probable cause that an African-American couple was discriminated against by the Limeses in 2003 when they looked at the Limeses' home at 14909 Cross Creek Rd. in Middleton Township, northwest of Bowling Green.
Joe Long, Otsego Local Schools District superintendent, said the allegations against Mr. Limes and his wife were "serious," but the board likely won't look into the matter until the complaint is heard in court. "Right now all we have are allegations," Mr. Long said. Only two African-Americans were among the 2,598 residents of Middleton Township in the 2000 Census.>> end snip
http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050302/NEWS02/503020423I've lived in Middleton Township for 17 years and am ashamed at this news and the statistics presented. God, I might as well be living in Mississippi. (no offense to anyone there who has an IQ in double figures, i.e.) Thankfully, we don't live within the Otsego school district. (no offense to anyone in that school district who has an IQ in double figures, i.e.)
I am writing to commend the realtor who, by the way, is one of the tops in the entire state. I suggest that, given the racial climate, he made a bold move.
It's interesting that I worked with a girl who lives on that road. Whenever I think of her I recall her at her desk at work this past January watching the inauguration on TV. Gee, I actually remember that more than I remember the fact that she told a lie about me and got me fired.
